Shyamala Navratri (Magha Gupta Navratri)

Shyamala Navratri is the nine-night worship of the Divine Mother from Magha Shukla Padyami to Magha Shukla Navami, also known as Magha Gupta Navratri. It is dedicated to Sri Raja Shyamala (Matangi) Devi, the goddess of learning, speech, music and the arts.

Who Is Raja Shyamala?

In the Sri Vidya tradition, Shyamala Devi is the Mantrini, the chief minister of Goddess Lalitha Parameshwari. She is dark green in complexion and holds a veena with a parrot beside her. As the daughter of Sage Matanga she is also called Matangi. The famous Shyamala Dandakam, traditionally attributed to the poet Kalidasa, is in her praise. Students, musicians, artists and speakers worship her in particular.

Special Days Within This Navratri

Magha masam is itself very sacred. Vasanta Panchami (Sri Panchami) falls on Magha Shukla Panchami within these nine days, when Saraswati puja and aksharabhyasam for children are performed; the Gnana Saraswati temple at Basara draws large crowds for aksharabhyasam on this day. Ratha Saptami on Saptami and Bheeshma Ashtami on Ashtami also fall in this period, making it a season that honours knowledge, health and dharma together.

How to Perform the Puja

  • On Padyami place a picture of Shyamala Devi or Saraswati Devi, install a kalasham and take sankalpam.
  • Keep books, pens and musical instruments near the altar and include them in the archana.
  • Recite Shyamala Dandakam, Shyamala Ashtottaram or Lalitha Sahasranamam.
  • Offer payasam, pongali, bananas or honey as naivedyam.
  • Conclude with puja on Navami and do parana on Dashami.

Rules and Benefits

As a Gupta Navratri, quiet japam and parayanam matter more than celebration. Sattvic food and one meal a day may be followed as health allows. Elders say students who read the Shyamala Dandakam before studying gain focus. Devotees seek clear speech, progress in studies and success in the arts.

May Raja Shyamala Devi fill your home with wisdom and sweet speech.
