Magha Gupta Navratri Shailaputri Puja
Shailaputri Puja is the first day of Magha Gupta Navratri, observed on Magha Shukla Padyami. On this day devotees worship Goddess Shailaputri, the first of the Navadurga forms, who is Parvati born as the daughter of Himavan, the king of mountains. Because this is a "Gupta" (hidden) Navratri, the worship is traditionally done quietly at home rather than with public celebration.
What is Gupta Navratri?
There are four Navratris in a year. Chaitra and Ashwayuja (Sharad) Navratris are celebrated openly by everyone, while the ones in Ashadha and Magha are called Gupta Navratris. They are kept mainly by Shakta upasakas and those doing mantra sadhana, and in North India they are known for the worship of the Dasha Mahavidyas. In Andhra Pradesh and Telangana it is not a mass festival, but Devi devotees and some families observe these nine days alongside the sacred practices of Magha masam.
The story of Shailaputri
Sati gave up her body in the yogic fire at Daksha's yagna, unable to bear the insult to Lord Shiva. She was reborn to Himavan and Menadevi and came to be called Shailaputri, "daughter of the mountain". She rides Nandi the bull, holds a trident in her right hand and a lotus in her left, and wears the crescent moon on her head. In yogic tradition she is linked with the Muladhara chakra, which is why every Navratri sadhana begins with her.
How to do the puja
- Rise before sunrise and bathe; the early-morning Magha snanam is considered especially meritorious.
- Clean the puja space, draw a muggu, and if you have set up a kalasham (Ghatasthapana), first worship Ganapati and the kalasha devata.
- Decorate the Goddess's picture or idol with turmeric, kumkum and white or red flowers.
- Chant "Om Devi Shailaputryai Namah" 108 times, along with the dhyana shloka "Vande vanchita labhaya chandrardha krita shekharam, vrisharudham shuladharam Shailaputrim yashasvinim".
- Many families offer payasam or sweets made with cow ghee as naivedyam.
- Light the lamp, recite Lalitha Sahasranamam or a Durga stotram, and finish with mangala harathi.
Vratha rules and fasting
Gupta Navratri sadhana asks for simple sattvic food, restraint, truthful speech and steady japa. Some people eat one meal a day for all nine days, others take only milk and fruit. Elders and anyone whose health does not allow fasting can simply keep the nama japa and parayanam. Keeping one's sadhana private, without display, is the spirit of the word "Gupta".
Significance
Devotees believe Shailaputri grants a mind as steady as a mountain and a firm resolve. Since Magha masam is itself prized for snanam, danam and japam, Devi sadhana begun in this month is held to be especially fruitful.
May Mother Shailaputri bless everyone with steadiness and auspiciousness.
