Masa Kalashtami: Worship of Lord Kala Bhairava
Kalashtami is a monthly observance that falls on the Ashtami of every Bahula (Krishna) Paksha. On this day devotees worship Lord Kala Bhairava, the fierce form of Shiva. The Kalashtami of Kartika Bahula Ashtami is celebrated with special devotion as Kala Bhairava Jayanti.
The Origin of Kala Bhairava
According to the Shiva Purana, Brahma once insulted Lord Shiva out of pride. From Shiva emerged the fierce Kala Bhairava, who cut off Brahma's fifth head. To be freed from the sin of Brahmahatya, Bhairava wandered the worlds holding the skull, and it fell from his hand only when he reached Kashi. That is why Kala Bhairava is worshipped as the guardian of Kashi, the Kotwal of Kashi. His vahana is the dog.
How to Worship
- Bathe in the morning and visit a Shiva temple or a Kala Bhairava shrine.
- At home, light a lamp with sesame or mustard oil before an image of Shiva or Bhairava.
- Recite the Kalabhairava Ashtakam or the Shiva Panchakshari.
- Offer minapa garelu (urad vadas), curd rice or jaggery as naivedyam.
- Feeding dogs is an important custom on Kalashtami.
Fasting Rules
Many devotees fast during the day and eat a simple satvik meal after the evening puja. Some keep a night vigil chanting Bhairava's names. Traditionally Kalashtami is observed on the day when the Ashtami tithi prevails at night. Fruit and milk may be taken according to one's capacity.
Blessings
Kala Bhairava is the lord of time. Devotees believe his worship removes fear, troubles from enemies and planetary afflictions, and brings discipline and courage. Some traditions recommend Bhairava puja for those facing Shani or Rahu doshas.
May Lord Kala Bhairava protect everyone from fear and grant courage.
