Magha Gupta Navratri Kalaratri Puja

Magha Gupta Navratri: Kalaratri Puja on the Seventh Day

Magha Gupta Navratri runs from Magha Shukla Padyami to Navami, and on its seventh day, Shukla Saptami, devotees worship Kalaratri, the seventh of the Navadurgas. Though fierce and destroyer of fear and evil forces, she grants only good to her devotees and so is also called Shubhankari. In Telugu regions this same day is Ratha Saptami.

What Is Gupta Navratri?

The Chaitra and Ashwayuja (Sharad) Navratris are celebrated openly by everyone. The Navratris of Ashadha and Magha are called Gupta (hidden) Navratris, because sadhakas observe them quietly through japa, meditation and parayanam. In South India, Magha Navratri is also observed as Shyamala Navratri with worship of Raja Shyamala Devi. Sri Panchami falls within these nine days, when Aksharabhyasam is performed at the Gnana Saraswati temple in Basara.

The Form of Kalaratri

Kalaratri Devi is dark in complexion, with loose flowing hair, a necklace that flashes like lightning and three eyes. She rides a donkey; her right hands show the varada and abhaya mudras, and her left hands hold an iron hook and a sword. She embodies the Kali principle that destroyed demons such as Raktabija. Her fearsome appearance exists only to destroy the fears of her devotees.

How to Perform the Puja

  • Bathe in the morning, light a lamp before the kalasham or the Goddess's picture and make the sankalpam.
  • Worship Kalaratri with kumkum and red or blue flowers such as hibiscus.
  • Read the Durga Saptashati, Devi Khadgamala or Durga Ashtottaram.
  • Jaggery, jaggery paayasam or chakkera pongali is the traditional naivedyam.
  • Since it is Ratha Saptami, many families first bathe with jilledu (calotropis) leaves and offer arghya to the Sun, then do the Devi puja.

Blessings and Observances

Devotees believe Kalaratri's worship removes fear of enemies, fear of untimely events and troubles from negative forces. During Gupta Navratri, sattvic food, celibacy and restrained speech are customary. Fast only as your health allows; fruits and milk are fine. A darshan of Sri Suryanarayana Swamy at Arasavalli is especially sacred on this day.

May Shubhankari Kalaratri Devi remove all your fears and bless you with courage.
