Navami of Magha Gupta Navratri: Worship of Siddhidatri

Magha Shukla Navami is the ninth and final day of the Magha Gupta Navratri. Devotees worship Siddhidatri, the ninth of the Navadurgas. The nine days of quiet sadhana reach their purnahuti with this Navami puja, and the parana is done the next day, on Dashami.

The Form of Siddhidatri

As her name says, Siddhidatri is the Mother who grants siddhis. Devi tradition holds that she bestows the ashta siddhis such as anima, mahima, garima and laghima. Devotees say Lord Shiva worshipped her to obtain the siddhis and attained his Ardhanarishvara form by her grace. She sits on a lotus, rides a lion and holds the conch, discus, mace and lotus in her four hands, with a calm and gracious look.

The Close of the Gupta Navratri

Magha is a month known for Surya worship and holy river baths. The Gupta Navratri runs between Vasantha Panchami, when Saraswati is worshipped, and Ratha Saptami, when Surya is worshipped. So these nine days bring together the worship of knowledge, radiance and power. On Navami, upasakas complete their japa count, perform homam and offer their sadhana to the Devi.

How to Perform the Puja

  • Bathe in the morning, light a lamp at the kalasham and meditate on Siddhidatri.
  • Worship the goddess with red and yellow flowers, lotuses and kumkum.
  • Chant "Om Devi Siddhidatryai Namah" and recite the Durga Saptashati or Lalitha Sahasranamam.
  • Those who are able may perform a small homam with purnahuti.
  • Offer sesame, payasam, pulihora or chakkera pongali as naivedyam.
  • Perform Kanya Puja with food and gifts for young girls, and on Dashami do kalasha visarjana and parana.

Significance

Devotees believe worshipping Siddhidatri brings success in undertakings, steadiness of mind and spiritual wisdom. The fruit of the nine days of sadhana is completed on this day.

May Mother Siddhidatri fulfil all your sincere resolves.
