Magha Gupta Navratri Parana
Magha Gupta Navratri Parana is the formal conclusion of the nine-day Devi vratham and fast. It is usually done on Magha Shukla Dashami, after Navami tithi has ended. Offering naivedyam to the Goddess and then accepting that prasadam completes the Gupta Navratri sadhana.
What is Parana?
In any vratham, breaking the fast at the right time and in the right way is as important as keeping it; this is called parana. Since the Navratri fast continues through Navami, most panchangams advise doing parana after Navami tithi ends and Dashami begins. Some families finish Kanya Puja and homam on Navami itself and do parana that evening. It is best to follow your family custom and the local panchangam timing.
Before the Parana
Magha Gupta Navratri is mostly private Devi upasana. Some sadhakas conclude their nine days of japa by offering a portion of it as homam and tarpanam. Many also perform Kanya Puja on Ashtami or Navami, honouring young girls as forms of the Goddess, washing their feet, feeding them and giving clothes or gifts.
How to do the Parana
- On Dashami morning, bathe and do the final puja to the kalasham and the Goddess.
- Bid farewell with udvasana mantras and move the kalasham (ghata visarjana). Sprinkle the kalasha water around the house and pour the rest into the tulasi pot.
- The grains sprouted at Ghatasthapana are treated as prasadam and returned to water or garden soil.
- Offer dishes such as pulihora, payasam or bobbatlu as naivedyam, then break the fast by first taking that prasadam.
- Seek the blessings of elders, and give annadanam or vastradanam to those in need.
A few cautions
After nine days of fasting, begin with light sattvic food instead of a heavy meal. Some families continue to avoid onion, garlic and non-vegetarian food on the parana day as well.
Significance
Devotees believe that parana brings the full fruit of the sadhana and the Goddess's blessing on nine days of tapas. The day carries a simple message: close your quiet sadhana with gratitude and carry its discipline into daily life.
By the grace of Jaganmata, may your sadhana bear fruit and your home be filled with peace and happiness.
