Magha Gupta Navratri Brahmacharini Puja
Brahmacharini Puja falls on Magha Shukla Vidiya, the second day of Magha Gupta Navratri. Goddess Brahmacharini is the second of the Navadurga forms: Parvati as the young ascetic who performed severe tapas to win Lord Shiva. She stands for discipline, patience and devotion to a goal.
The story of her tapas
Born as the daughter of Himavan, Parvati resolved, on the advice of Narada, to have only Shiva as her husband. She went to the forest and did tapas for thousands of years, first living on fruits and roots, then only on fallen leaves, and finally giving up even leaves. That is why she is also called Aparna. Pleased with her penance, Shiva accepted her. The story is well known from the Shiva Purana and Kalidasa's Kumarasambhavam.
Brahmacharini is shown in white, walking barefoot, with a japa mala in her right hand and a kamandalu in her left. Yogic tradition links her with the Svadhishthana chakra.
Why this day matters in Gupta Navratri
Magha Gupta Navratri is above all a Navratri of sadhana, and Brahmacharini is tapas in visible form. Many upasakas increase their japa count on this day, keep a period of silence or eat only one meal. Even rising early in the Magha cold to bathe and sit for japa is a small tapas in itself.
Puja steps
- Bathe and, if possible, wear white or light-coloured clothes.
- Worship the kalasham and the Goddess's picture with turmeric and kumkum; offer jasmine, chamanthi or other flowers.
- Recite the dhyana shloka "Dadhana kara padmabhyam akshamala kamandalu, devi prasidatu mayi Brahmacharinyanuttama".
- Chant "Om Devi Brahmacharinyai Namah" on a japa mala.
- Offer sugar or patika bellam (rock sugar) and fruits as naivedyam, as many families do.
- After deeparadhana and harathi, sit quietly in meditation for a while.
Blessings sought
Devotees pray to Brahmacharini for patience, concentration and the perseverance to complete what they begin. Students and those starting any deeksha remember her specially. Her story teaches that tapas is not merely giving up food, but holding the mind steadily on a worthy aim.
May Mother Brahmacharini grant everyone patience and strength of resolve.
