Magha Gupta Navratri Mahagauri Puja

Day Eight of Magha Gupta Navratri: Worship of Mahagauri

Magha Shukla Ashtami is the eighth day of the Magha Gupta Navratri. On this day devotees worship Mahagauri, the eighth of the Navadurgas. The Magha Gupta Navratri is known for quiet, private sadhana done by upasakas, which is why it is called "Gupta" (hidden).

The Form of Mahagauri

Mahagauri shines with a pure white radiance like the conch, the jasmine and the moon. Dressed in white, she rides a bull. Her four hands hold a trident and a damaru and show the abhaya and varada mudras. The Puranic story says Parvati's body turned dark during her severe penance to win Shiva; pleased, Shiva bathed her with Ganga water and she shone forth as Mahagauri. She therefore stands for purity and serenity.

Ashtami in the Magha Gupta Navratri

Unlike the public Durgashtami of Sharad Navaratri, the Ashtami of the Magha Gupta Navratri is an inward worship carried out in the home shrine with mantra japa. It falls three days after Vasantha Panchami, as winter gives way to spring. Devi upasakas recite the Saptashati and perform Kanya Puja on this day.

How to Perform the Puja

  • Bathe before sunrise and, if possible, wear white or light-coloured clothes.
  • Light a lamp at the kalasham set up at the start of the Navratri and meditate on Mahagauri.
  • Worship with jasmine and other white flowers, turmeric and kumkum.
  • Chant "Om Devi Mahagauryai Namah".
  • Offer coconut, coconut sweets and payasam as naivedyam.
  • Some families worship young girls as forms of the Devi, feed them and give them gifts.

Significance

Devotees believe that worshipping Mahagauri cleanses the mind and grants peace and saubhagyam. Those facing delays in marriage pray to her especially.

May the radiant white light of Mahagauri fill your life with purity and peace.
