Devi Navratri Mahagauri Puja

Durgashtami: Mahagauri Puja

Mahagauri Puja is performed on the eighth day of Devi (Sharad) Navratri, on Ashwayuja Shukla Ashtami, a day better known as Durgashtami or Mahashtami. Mahagauri is the eighth Navadurga. In Telangana, Saddula Bathukamma is also celebrated on this day, which makes it one of the liveliest days of Dasara in the Telugu states.

The Story of Mahagauri

To win Lord Shiva as her husband, Goddess Parvati performed severe penance for years, ignoring sun, rain and cold, until her body turned dark. Pleased with her devotion, Shiva bathed her with the waters of the Ganga, and she began to shine with a pure white glow like a conch, the moon and jasmine flowers. From then on she has been worshipped as Mahagauri. She wears white, rides a bull, holds a trident and a damaru, and shows the gestures of blessing and protection.

  • Decorate the goddess with jasmine and other white flowers and chant "Om Devi Mahagauryai Namaha".
  • Many families offer coconut, coconut sweets and payasam as naivedyam.
  • Some families perform Kumari Puja today, honouring young girls as forms of the goddess by washing their feet, applying bottu and offering food and gifts.
  • Some worship their vehicles and tools today, while others keep Ayudha Puja for Mahanavami.

Saddula Bathukamma and Temple Celebrations

Bathukamma, which begins in Telangana on Mahalaya Amavasya, ends on Durgashtami with Saddula Bathukamma. Women stack large Bathukammas with tangedu and gunugu flowers, sing and dance around them in the evening, and immerse them in lakes and tanks. Families share saddulu such as curd rice and pulihora. Special pujas are held for Kanaka Durga in Vijayawada and Bhramaramba at Srisailam.

Blessings of the Day

Devotees believe that worshipping Mahagauri washes away past sins, purifies the mind and blesses married life with harmony. Her story shows that through patience and tapas one can rise above any hardship and shine.

May Mother Mahagauri fill every life with pure, bright light.
