Meaning

Durga Saptashloki is the essence of the entire Devi Mahatmyam. When Lord Shiva asks Devi for a simple, powerful method for success in Kali Yuga, she reveals these seven verses as the most accessible and potent remedy for all problems. These shlokas contain the combined power of Mahakali, Mahalakshmi, and Mahasaraswati.

The first verse explains that the Goddess, as Mahamaya, can draw even the minds of the wise into illusion, indicating her supreme control over the universe. Remembering her as “Durga” instantly destroys fears, obstacles, poverty, sorrow, and negative influences. When remembered in calmness, she bestows auspiciousness, clarity, good fortune, and protection.

The middle verses praise her as the embodiment of all auspiciousness, the fulfiller of desires, the ultimate refuge and savior of the distressed. She is Narayani, the supreme cosmic energy, removing suffering from all beings.

The fifth and sixth verses assure that she removes diseases, grants desired boons, protects her devotees, and never abandons anyone who surrenders to her. Those who seek refuge in her will always find safety.

The final verse sums it up —
She removes all troubles from the three worlds and destroys the enemies (inner & outer) of her devotees.

It is believed that chanting these seven verses is equivalent to chanting the full Devi Mahatmyam.

Frequently asked questions

Where do the seven verses of Durga Saptashloki come from?
All seven are taken from the Devi Mahatmyam (Durga Saptashati) of the Markandeya Purana. The first comes from its opening chapter, Durge smrita from the fourth, and the remaining five from the Narayani Stuti in the eleventh chapter.
Why does Durga Saptashloki open with a dialogue between Shiva and Devi?
Shiva asks the Goddess for an easy means of getting things accomplished in Kali Yuga, and she answers that out of affection for him she is revealing this praise of Amba. That frame is why the seven verses are read when the full Saptashati cannot be.
Which rishi and deities does the viniyoga of Durga Saptashloki name?
It names Narayana as the rishi, Anushtup as the metre, and Mahakali, Mahalakshmi and Mahasaraswati together as the deities. These three preside over the three sections of the Devi Mahatmyam.
Is Sarvamangala mangalye part of Durga Saptashloki?
Yes, it is the third of the seven verses, addressing the Goddess as Shive, Tryambake, Gauri and Narayani. Verses three to five all close with a salutation ending in namostu te.
When is Durga Saptashloki usually recited, and how long does it take?
Many people read it daily through Navaratri and on Fridays, and it takes about five minutes including the opening dialogue. Its seventh verse, Sarvabadha prashamanam, asks the Goddess to quell every obstruction in the three worlds and destroy the reciter's enemies.
