Meaning

This hymn comes from the Virata Parva of the Mahabharata, and the colophon here places it in the eighth chapter. The Pandavas have finished twelve years in the forest and must now spend a thirteenth year unrecognised. As Yudhishthira walks toward the pleasant city of Virata, Viratanagaram ramyam gacchamano Yudhishthirah, he praises Durga silently in his mind.

The goddess of the Krishna story (verses 1 to 6)

The opening verses recall Durga as the girl born from Yashoda's womb in Nandagopa's clan, dear to Narayana, who was flung against a rock by Kamsa and rose into the sky. She is called Vasudevasya bhagini, sister of Krishna, wearing divine garlands and carrying sword and shield.

Her form and her names (verses 7 to 23)

Yudhishthira then addresses her directly as Krishna, Kumari and Brahmacharini, bright as the rising sun with a face like the full moon, four-armed, wearing peacock-feather bracelets and raising a banner of peacock feathers. He names the Vindhya mountain as her lasting home and gives the well-known reading of her name, durgat tarayase durge tat tvam durga smrita janaih: because she carries people across what is hard to cross, they call her Durga. She is the refuge of those lost in forests, sinking in the sea or held by robbers.

The plea and the answer (verses 24 to 36)

Fallen from his kingdom, Yudhishthira takes refuge in her. The goddess appears and tells him he will soon win in battle, destroy the Kaurava army and rule again with his brothers. She adds that anyone who remembers her in exile, in a city, in war, in a forest, at sea or on a mountain will find nothing out of reach, and that no one in Virata's city will recognise the Pandavas. For this reason many read it before travelling far or in a time of danger.

Frequently asked questions

Where in the Mahabharata does the Yudhishthira Kruta Durga Stotram appear?
It belongs to the Virata Parva; the colophon in this text calls it the eighth chapter. Yudhishthira recites it in his mind as the Pandavas head for King Virata's city to begin their year in disguise.
Why does the Yudhishthira Durga Stotram mention Yashoda and Kamsa?
Verses 2 and 3 identify Durga with the daughter born to Yashoda in Nandagopa's family, whom Kamsa hurled at a rock and who rose into the sky. That is also why verse 4 calls her the sister of Vasudeva, meaning Krishna.
How does the Yudhishthira Kruta Durga Stotram explain the name Durga?
Verse 21 says durgat tarayase durge tat tvam durga smrita janaih: you carry people across difficulty, so people remember you as Durga. It then names the traveller lost in the forest, the man sinking at sea and the captive of robbers as those she protects.
What does Durga promise Yudhishthira at the end of the Virata Nagaram Ramyam stotram?
She tells him he will soon win in battle, defeat the Kaurava army and enjoy the earth again with his brothers. She also says the Kurus and the people of Virata's city will not recognise the Pandavas while they live there.
How many verses does the Virata Nagaram Ramyam Durga Stotram have?
This version has 36 verses: the first six set the scene, verses 7 to 26 are Yudhishthira's praise and verses 27 to 36 give the goddess's reply. Verse 34 says that whoever hears or reads this hymn with devotion will see their undertakings succeed.
