Satyanarayana Swamy Vratham

Satyanarayana Swamy Vratham: Worship of God as Truth

The Satyanarayana Swamy Vratham is the worship of Sri Maha Vishnu as the embodiment of Truth. It is most auspicious when done on the Pournami of any month, and Telugu families also perform it on happy occasions such as gruhapravesham, weddings, birthdays and new beginnings.

Background of the Vratha Katha

The story of this vratham appears in the Reva Khanda of the Skanda Purana. When Narada asked for a simple way to relieve people's suffering in Kali Yuga, Sri Maha Vishnu himself taught this vratham. The katha is told in five chapters about a poor brahmin, a woodcutter, the merchant Sadhu and his daughter Kalavati, and King Tungadhwaja. They show that troubles came when promises were broken or the prasadam was ignored, and that devotion restored happiness.

How to Perform the Vratham

  • At an auspicious time, clean the house, spread rice on a peetham, set up a kalasham and place the Swamy's picture above it.
  • Begin with Vighneswara Puja, followed by Navagraha Puja and Ashta Dikpalaka Puja.
  • Worship Satyanarayana Swamy with tulasi, flowers, turmeric and kumkum through the shodashopachara puja and recite his Ashtottara Shatanamavali.
  • Listen to the five chapters of the vratha katha with family and friends.
  • Prepare the prasadam, sapada bhakshyam (rava kesari), with rava, ghee, sugar, banana and milk, and offer it as naivedyam.
  • Offer mangala harathi and share the prasadam with everyone. The prasadam should always be accepted.

Annavaram Satyadeva

The Sri Veera Venkata Satyanarayana Swamy temple on Ratnagiri hill at Annavaram in the East Godavari region is famous for this vratham. Many families perform it there together every day, and newly married couples traditionally visit Annavaram to do the vratham.

Significance

Devotees believe the vratham brings peace, prosperity, children and good health to the family. Its lesson is to keep one's word and remain grateful to God.

May the grace of Satyadeva bring auspiciousness to your home always.
