Meaning

The hundred and eight names used in the archane portion of the Satyanarayana vrata. The list opens Om Satyadevaya Namah, Om Satyatmane Namah, Om Satyabhutaya Namah, and the word satya keeps returning through it. Families recite it on Purnima evenings, after a wedding, on moving into a new house, and when a vow that was made has finally been kept.

Significance

Those first three names set the terms. This is Vishnu addressed as truth, and the vrata built around him is about a word given and then honoured. Read the katha and the pattern is hard to miss: the poor brahmin, the woodcutter, the merchant Sadhu Vaishya, the cowherd boys. Each of them promises the pooja and then lets it slide. What goes wrong for them afterwards is not punishment for unbelief; it is the consequence of a broken promise. And in every case the remedy is the same, which is to perform the pooja late rather than abandon it.

That is why this particular vrata attaches itself to the moments when a family has something to discharge. A wedding done, a house occupied, an illness passed, a job found after a long wait. The Satyanarayana pooja is the standard way a Kannada household closes the loop on a vow, and the ashtottara is the part where the names are said one by one over tulasi.

The prasada carries the same logic of measure. Rava, sugar, ghee, milk and banana, each in one and a quarter measures, is the traditional proportion, which is why people speak of the savva-ser sheera. Banana is never left out. The katha is firm that the prasada must be received and eaten by everyone present, and the story's sharpest turn comes when it is refused.

How and when to chant

Purnima evening, after sunset, is the usual time. Kartika, Vaishakha and Shravana Purnima are favoured, and so is Ekadashi in some families, but no Purnima is unsuitable. The person keeping the vrata usually eats lightly or not at all until the pooja is over.

The order is fixed and easy. Clean the place and set a low table with a cloth, banana leaves or stems at the corners if the family keeps that custom. Sankalpa first, then Ganesha pooja, then the kalasha, then the reading of the katha in its five chapters, then the ashtottara archane with tulasi, then arati, then prasada given to everyone present without exception.

A purohita is called when a family wants the full procedure with a homa or a formal sankalpa, particularly after a wedding. Plenty of households do it themselves with a printed book, and that has always been acceptable for this vrata. If someone at home reads Kannada well, let them read the katha aloud rather than playing a recording; the five chapters are meant to be heard as a story, and they land differently when a person in the room is telling them.

Frequently asked questions

Why does every name in the Satyanarayana Ashtottara begin with Satya?
The namavali addresses Vishnu as truth itself, so every name is built on satya, from Satyadeva and Satyatma to Satyavaraha and Satyasimha. It matches the vrata katha, where each character's trouble starts with a vow that was made and then forgotten.
At what point in the Satyanarayana pooja are these names recited?
They form the archana, read after the Ganapati pooja, kalasha pooja and main pooja, with a tulasi leaf or flower offered at each name. The five-chapter katha, arati and prasada follow, though some family vrata books place the katha first.
Which other deities does the Satyanarayana namavali fold into Satya?
Past the opening run of qualities, the list names Satyarudra, Satyabrahma, Satyendra, Satyavahni and Satyavayu, and the avatara names Satyavaraha and Satyasimha. Rudra, Brahma, Indra, Agni and Vayu are all addressed as forms of the one truth.
Why does the Satyanarayana namavali move from the feet to the crown?
Near the end it worships the image part by part: Satyashripada, Satyodara, Satyahrudaya, Satyabahu, Satyamukha, Satyashiras and finally Satyamukuta, the crown. Names for his garment, ornaments and weapons come next.
How many names does this Satyanarayana Ashtottara actually have?
It is titled as 108, but this version has 109 lines because Satyasakshine and Satyamedhaya each appear twice. It closes with Om Satyanarayana Devatabhyo Namah and takes around ten minutes at a Purnima evening archana.
