Satyanarayana Vratham is the worship of Lord Vishnu as Satyanarayana Swamy, the Lord who is Truth itself. A family can perform it at home: sankalpam, Ganapati puja, kalasha puja, the Swamy's shodashopachara puja, reading the five chapters of the katha, mangala harathi and sharing prasadam. Tradition places the katha in the Reva Khanda of the Skanda Purana.
When should Satyanarayana Vratham be done?
The katha itself says the vratham can be done on any day with devotion, so there is no strict tithi rule. Popular choices are:
- Pournami – many Telugu homes do it every full moon day.
- Ekadashi or Sankranti and other festival days.
- After gruhapravesam, a wedding or upanayanam, as thanksgiving.
- To fulfil a vow (mokku) or simply for the family's wellbeing.
Evening at sandhya time is traditional, but many families do it in the morning. Follow your family custom or your purohit's advice.
Samagri checklist
Keep everything ready a day earlier. Items vary a little by region and family.

| Kalasham | Copper or silver vessel, water, coconut, blouse piece, rice |
| Puja items | Turmeric, kumkum, sandal paste, akshatalu, flowers, tulasi, betel leaves, areca nuts |
| Deeparadhana | Lamps, ghee or oil, wicks, agarbatti, camphor |
| Naivedyam | Rava prasadam (kesari), bananas, other fruits, coconuts |
| Panchamritam | Milk, curd, ghee, honey, sugar |

How is the prasadam (rava kesari) made?
The special offering is called sapada prasadam – made in a measure of one and a quarter. Traditionally rava (wheat or Bombay rava), ghee, milk, sugar and banana are taken in equal measures, for example one and a quarter cups each.
- Roast the rava in ghee until fragrant.
- Boil the milk (some mix in water), add the rava slowly and stir to avoid lumps.
- Add sugar and let it melt; mix in banana pieces.
- Add cardamom powder and cashews and raisins fried in ghee.
Prepare it in a clean kitchen without tasting, and distribute only after the puja.
Order of the puja, step by step
If a purohit conducts it, follow their sequence. For families doing it themselves, the broad order is:
- Purification and sankalpam – bath, clean clothes, achamanam and the vratha sankalpam with your gotram and names.
- Ganapati puja with a turmeric Ganapati, praying for an obstacle-free puja.
- Kalasha sthapana and puja – water, mango leaves and coconut in the kalasham.
- Navagraha and Ashta Dikpalaka puja – many families invoke them on rice; some keep it brief.
- Shodashopachara puja of Satyanarayana Swamy, with archana using the ashtottara shatanamavali.
- Katha shravanam – read all five chapters; some break a coconut or show harathi after each.
- Mangala harathi and mantrapushpam, followed by pradakshina and namaskaram.
- Prasadam and teertham for everyone present.
Summary of the five katha chapters
Chapter 1
Narada Maharshi, moved by people's suffering, asks Lord Vishnu for a simple path. The Lord teaches the Satyanarayana Vratham and its blessings.
Chapter 2
A poor brahmin of Kashi receives the vratham from the Lord, who appears as an old brahmin. His life improves, and a woodcutter who watches him also performs it and prospers.
Chapter 3
The merchant Sadhu sees King Ulkamukha performing the vratham and vows to do it if he is blessed with a child. Daughter Kalavati is born and married, but he keeps postponing the vow, and while trading abroad he and his son-in-law are imprisoned.
Chapter 4
His wife Lilavati and Kalavati perform the vratham and the men are freed. On the way home the merchant lies to the Lord, disguised as an ascetic, that his boat holds only leaves, and the wealth turns into leaves until he repents. Kalavati, rushing to greet her husband without taking prasadam, sees his boat vanish; it returns once she accepts the prasadam.
Chapter 5
King Tungadhwaja ignores the prasadam offered by cowherd boys and faces losses. Realising his mistake, he joins them in the vratham, accepts prasadam and regains his fortune.
The message: keep your promises, speak the truth and accept prasadam with respect, whoever offers it.
Fasting and simple rules
Many devotees fast until the puja ends and break the fast with prasadam. It is not compulsory; children, elders, pregnant women and anyone on medication can take fruit or milk, and should consult a doctor if unsure. Keep the day sattvic and the atmosphere calm.
