Chandra Darshan

Chandra Darshan: Seeing the First Crescent Moon

Chandra Darshan is the monthly custom of sighting and saluting the thin crescent moon that appears in the western sky after sunset, the first evening after Amavasya, usually on Shukla Paksha Vidiya. Seeing this first moon is considered auspicious and is believed to bring peace of mind and prosperity. Some devotees fast through the day and eat only after seeing the moon.

The Story of Chandra

The Puranas describe Chandra as the son of sage Atri; another account says he rose from the churning of the ocean of milk. Daksha Prajapati gave his twenty-seven daughters, the nakshatras, in marriage to Chandra. Because Chandra favoured only Rohini, the angry Daksha cursed him to waste away. Chandra worshipped Lord Shiva at Prabhasa, and Shiva, though unable to cancel the curse fully, blessed him to wane for a fortnight and wax again for the next. Shiva also placed the crescent on His head and became Chandrashekhara. So the young moon after Amavasya stands for renewal and fresh hope.

How to Observe

  • Bathe in the morning; fast through the day or eat a single meal if you can.
  • After sunset, look to the western sky and bow when the crescent becomes visible.
  • Offer arghyam to the moon with water mixed with milk, a little akshatalu and white flowers, from a copper or silver vessel.
  • Chant "Om Somaya Namaha" or the Chandra Gayatri.
  • Offer milk, payasam or other white rice dishes as naivedyam, then break the fast.
  • Donating rice, milk or white clothes is considered good.

One Important Exception

While the crescent is auspicious every month, Telugu families know that the moon should not be seen on Bhadrapada Shukla Chavithi, the night of Vinayaka Chavithi. If one sees it by mistake, the custom is to listen to the Shamantaka Mani story and sprinkle akshatalu on one's head.

Significance

In jyotisha, Chandra is the karaka of the mind, so Chandra Darshan and moon worship are believed to bring mental calm and steadiness. This small monthly ritual also keeps us connected to nature and the rhythm of time.

May the cool light of the moon bring peace and happiness to your home.
