Meaning

Source and setting

The Sri Taramba Hrudayam, titled Sri Mad Ugratara Hridayam in its colophon, comes from the Bhairavi Tantra as Shiva's answer to Parvati. Tara is the second of the ten Mahavidyas, and this text addresses her fierce Ugratara form. When Parvati asks how the hymn arose, Shiva says Indra used it in the war of the devas and asuras to destroy hostile enemies and gain strength and fame. The viniyoga gives Bhairava as rishi, anushtup as metre and Ugratara as deity, with streem as bija, hoom as shakti and namah as kilaka. The nyasa uses the syllables streem, hreem, hoom, treem, aim and hamsah.

Dhyana and the hidden names

The meditation verse pictures her red-bodied and red-robed, bright as a crore suns, with a crescent moon on her head and a noose, sword and goad in her four hands. She is called Jagattarini, the one who ferries the world across. In verses 9 to 12 Shiva gives what he calls hidden names, and they move through the three gunas: Rajorupa who creates the world, Tamorupa and Mahamaya with a terrifying roar, Kalarupa and Kalikakhya who dissolves it. The list ends with Siddhilakshmi, Brahmani, Mahakali and Mahalaya. Verse 14 salutes her as tarinim bhava pathodheh, the one who carries beings over the ocean of worldly life.

Prayoga and phala shruti

Verses 15 to 20 are ritual instructions using mantra-charged water, sandal paste, ash, flowers, akshata and kajjala. These are tantric prayogas meant for initiates working under a guru, and the hymn itself insists in verse 7 and in its last line that it be kept from the uninitiated. Verses 21 to 23 say the Hridayam destroys sin and outweighs crores of sacrifices and pilgrimages, and they name great sorrow, grave illness, danger to life and deep fear as the times to recite it.

Frequently asked questions

What is the source of the Sri Taramba Hrudayam?
The colophon places it in the Bhairavi Tantra as a dialogue between Shiva and Parvati, under the title Sri Mad Ugratara Hridayam. In verse 3 Shiva tells Parvati that Indra first used it in the war between the devas and asuras.
How is Tara pictured in the dhyana verse of the Tara Hrudayam?
Verse 4 describes her as bright as a crore suns with a young crescent moon on her head, red-limbed, in red garments, her face like the full moon. Her four arms hold the noose, sword, great goad and other weapons, and she is called Jagattarini, the one who carries the world across.
Which names of the goddess does the Tara Hrudayam give in verses 9 to 12?
Shiva lists names such as Tarini, Tarala, Trirupa, Taraniprabha, Mahamaya, Kalikakhya, Raktangi, Siddhilakshmi and Mahakali. In verse 13 he says he becomes the servant of anyone who reads these names with a focused mind.
Why does the Tara Hrudayam say it must be kept secret?
Verse 7 says it is not to be disclosed to the uninitiated, and the last verse repeats that it should be guarded and never made public. Verses 15 to 20 describe tantric prayogas with water, sandal paste, ash, flowers, akshata and kajjala, which tradition reserves for those initiated by a guru.
In what situations does the Ugra Tara Hrudayam say it should be recited?
Verses 22 and 23 name great sorrow, serious illness, a crisis, danger to life and great fear as the times to recite it. The same verses compare its merit to crores of Vedic sacrifices and to bathing in the Ganga and every other tirtha.
