Meaning

Sri Ranga Gadya is the heartfelt, spontaneous outpouring of total surrender (prapatti) composed by Bhagavad Ramanujacharya before Lord Ranganatha. The hymn begins by saluting Ramanuja as the sage who reveals the true nature of the supreme reality, and then moves into an intense expression of adoration for Lord Narayana, whose infinite auspicious qualities—knowledge, strength, compassion, tenderness, valor, truthfulness, kindness, and countless others—are praised as an immeasurable ocean.

Lord Ranganatha is described as the supreme Brahman, the eternal master of all sentient and insentient beings, the ultimate refuge who is untouched by any defect. The devotee then reflects upon his own nature: that he is inherently meant for eternal service, that the Lord alone is his master, goal, and joy. He wishes to eternally and lovingly serve the Lord with complete devotion born out of true realization.

The devotee confesses his helplessness, acknowledging his bondage to ignorance, karmic impressions, and the overwhelming influence of material nature. He recognizes that these obstacles are impossible to overcome by personal effort and therefore surrenders entirely at the divine lotus feet of Lord Narayana, who is the universal refuge.

Trusting fully in the Lord’s boundless compassion, the devotee prays for the gift of eternal service, stating that he has no other path. Even if he lacks deep understanding or the capacity to practice spiritual disciplines perfectly, he implores the Lord to anchor his mind in the truths expressed in this prayer. The Gadya ends with a profound salutation to the limitless ocean of compassion, the protector of all beings, Lord Ranganatha.

Benefits:
    •    Deepens understanding of surrender and divine refuge
    •    Instills humility, devotion, and inner clarity
    •    Helps dissolve ego, fear, and karmic burden
    •    Awakens deep faith in Lord Narayana’s compassion
    •    Inspires a life of service, purity, and spiritual discipline

Frequently asked questions

Who composed Sri Ranga Gadyam, and where?
The closing line of the text credits Bhagavad Ramanuja, and Sri Vaishnava tradition holds that he recited it before Lord Ranganatha at Srirangam. It is one of his three prose prayers, known together as the Gadya Trayam.
How is Sri Ranga Gadyam different from Sharanagati Gadyam and Vaikuntha Gadyam?
Sharanagati Gadyam is a dialogue of surrender before Sri and Narayana, and Vaikuntha Gadyam describes the Lord in Paramapada. Sri Ranga Gadyam is the shortest of the three and is addressed to the Lord reclining at Srirangam, asking only for nitya kainkarya, eternal service.
What does the image of oil in sesame and fire in wood mean in Sri Ranga Gadyam?
With the phrase tila-taila-vat daru-vahni-vat, Ramanuja says matter (prakriti) is mixed with the self the way oil is in sesame and fire in wood, so the two are hard to separate. This entanglement is one reason he gives for being unable to free himself and taking refuge at Narayana's feet.
What does Ramanuja ask for in the closing lines of Sri Ranga Gadyam?
He asks for permanent service born of joy in experiencing the Lord, saying na jane gatim anyatha, I know no other way. He then prays that, merely by uttering these words, his mind be fixed in their meaning this very day.
On which day is Sri Ranga Gadyam specially recited in temples?
Tradition holds that Ramanuja surrendered before Ranganatha and Ranganayaki at Srirangam on Panguni Uttiram, the Uttara Phalguni star day in the month of Phalguna, so the Gadya Trayam is recited in Sri Vaishnava temples on that day. Sri Ranga Gadyam on its own takes under ten minutes.
