Meaning
The Sri Kali Kavacham called Trailokya Vijaya, victory over the three worlds, is an 18-verse armour prayer to Adya Kali. Its colophon places it in the seventh ullasa of the Mahanirvana Tantra, where Sadashiva teaches the worship of the primal Kali.
The setting
The first two verses give the viniyoga. Shiva is the rishi, Anushtup the metre and Adya Kali the deity. The maya bija hrim is the bija, the rama bija shrim is the shakti and krim is the kilaka, and the kavacham is applied for the fulfilment of wishes.
The armour, limb by limb
Verse three opens with the three syllables. Hrim adya me shirah patu asks Adya to guard the head, shrim Kali the face, krim Parashakti the heart, and Paratpara the throat. The next verses go down the body: Jagaddhatri for the eyes, Shankari for the ears, Mahamaya for the nose, Sarvamangala for the tongue, Kaumari for the teeth and Charuhasini for the chin. Aparna guards the sides, Kamathasana the waist, Vishalakshi the navel and Parvati the feet. Jayadurga is asked to protect the life breath. Verses nine and ten close the gaps: whatever place is left uncovered, Adya Kali Sanatani is asked to guard.
What the closing verses say
Verse 11 says it should be read at the time of puja with the mind fixed on Adya. Verse 14 makes a thousand recitations its purascharana, and verses 15 and 16 describe writing it on birch bark and wearing it in a gold case. The last verses speak of fearlessness, victory and learning.
