Meaning

The Hayagriva Ashtakam is a sacred hymn praising Lord Hayagriva—the divine embodiment of knowledge, wisdom, memory, learning, and purity. Each verse beautifully describes His radiant form and His benevolent grace that blesses devotees with supreme intelligence and spiritual clarity.

The hymn begins by meditating upon the divine Hayagriva, dressed in yellow garments, adorned with shining ornaments, and possessing the majestic horse-faced form, symbolizing supreme wisdom. His form glows with purity like jasmine, the moon, and the conch, with lotus-like eyes radiating compassion. Holding the conch and discus, He protects devotees and dispels ignorance.

He is adorned with garlands of pearls and shines with the brilliance of countless suns. Jewel-studded ornaments like earrings and armlets enhance His divine splendor. Seated on the serpent Adisesha with Goddess Lakshmi beside Him, He wears the Sri Vatsa mark and the Kaustubha gem—signs of supreme divinity.

Meditated upon in yogic posture, He is the master of the Vedas, the knower of Vedanta, the ocean of all knowledge. His white divine form, four arms, and victory-garland make Him the ultimate symbol of purity and spiritual strength. Seated on a gem-studded throne, crowned with radiant jewels, He illuminates the cosmos.

The final verses praise Him as the source of all knowledge in countless universes, whose gentle smile exudes compassion and bliss. He is the giver of all learning, understanding, and wisdom needed for progress in worldly and spiritual paths.

The phalashruti declares that those who recite this Hayagriva Ashtakam with devotion gain long life, strength, courage, knowledge, intelligence, and happiness. All desires are fulfilled, victories are assured, and sins are removed by the grace of Lord Hayagriva.

With only ten verses it takes two or three minutes. It is a favourite on Hayagriva Jayanti, which falls on Shravana Purnima, and with students before they sit down to study.
