Meaning

This hymn from the Bhavishya Purana explains that the sufferings caused by the nine planets—especially the Sun and other grahas—continuously trouble human beings. To remove these planetary afflictions, the Purana prescribes recitation of Surya’s divine names.

The hymn lists the sacred names of the Sun: Aditya, Savita, Surya, Pushan, Arka, Ravi, Bhaga, Aryama, Tejonidhi, Hari, and many more. Each name represents a divine quality—light, nourishment, vitality, wisdom, compassion, and cosmic order. Surya is depicted as the Lord of the Vedas, the witness of all karma, the master of time, the father of Saturn, the controller of planets, and the supreme energy that governs the world.

He is the creator, sustainer, and destroyer—Jagat-karta, Jagat-sakshi. His rays purify water, sustain life, dispel darkness, and regulate seasons. As Dhanvantari, He cures diseases; as Vishnu, Rudra, Narayana, and Mahadeva, He becomes the essence of all gods. Surya is the soul of the moving and non-moving worlds—Characharatma, the subtle and all-pervading Paramatma.

The hymn declares that one who worships Surya with these names becomes free from sins, diseases, poverty, obstacles, and planetary troubles. Reciting these names especially on Sundays brings immediate happiness, peace, strength, prosperity, and long, healthy life.

Frequently asked questions

Which Purana contains this Sri Aditya Stotram, and who is it addressed to?
The colophon places it in the Bhavishya Purana. The first two verses address a king as rajan and rajendra, telling him that the nine planets constantly trouble people and that hearing the names of the Sun removes that affliction.
How is the Bhavishya Purana Aditya Stotram different from the Aditya Hridayam?
Aditya Hridayam belongs to the Ramayana, where sage Agastya teaches it to Rama before his battle with Ravana. This Aditya Stotram is a string of the Sun's names from the Bhavishya Purana, recited mainly to ease troubles from the planets.
Which names of the Sun appear in the Bhavishya Purana Aditya Stotram?
Verse 3 opens with Aditya, Savita, Surya, Pusha, Arka and Ravi, and later verses add Kashyapatmaja, Japakusuma-sankasha and Shanaishcharapita, the father of Saturn. Verse 8 calls him Dhvantebha-simha, a lion to the elephant of darkness.
Why does the Aditya Stotram from the Bhavishya Purana name the other planets?
Verses 13 and 14 identify the Sun with the guardians of the directions and with each graha: Indu, Bhauma, Saumya, Guru, Kavi, Shauri, Vidhuntuda and Ketu. By praising him as all of them, the hymn answers the planetary affliction it raised in its opening lines.
On which day does the Bhavishya Purana Aditya Stotram say it should be read?
Verses 16 and 17 name Sunday, saying that one who reads these names on that day finds relief from planetary affliction, quick happiness and a long life. Verse 15, before it, speaks of freedom from sin and illness as the Purana's own promise.
