Meaning

The Aapadunmoolana Sri Durga Stotram is a ten-verse prayer in long Sragdhara-style lines. Nine verses close with the same refrain, Durgam devim prapadye sharanam aham asheshapad-unmoolanaya, I take refuge in Goddess Durga to uproot every calamity. Each verse leans on a scene from the Devi Mahatmya, so reciting it is like walking quickly through the Durga Saptashati.

Verses 1 to 5: the great battles

Verse 1 opens with Vishnu in yoganidra on the serpent bed, Madhu and Kaitabha born from his ear, and a frightened Brahma praising the Goddess who then destroys them. Verse 2 tells of Mahisha, who seized the three worlds and took Indra's seat, and of Durga standing on his head after the kill. Verse 3 recalls the gods asking her to appear again whenever such dangers return. Verse 4 covers Dhumralochana, Chanda and Munda, the name Chamunda, and the end of Raktabija. In verse 5 the shaktis of Brahma, Shiva, Skanda, Narayana, Varaha, Narasimha and Indra fight beside her until Nishumbha falls, and she then absorbs them and kills Shumbha alone, sword in hand.

Verses 6 to 9: forms and refuge

Verse 6 names the future forms promised at the end of the Devi Mahatmya: Nandaja, Bhramari, Bhima, Shakambhari, Raktadantika, and Durga who slays the demon Durgama. Verse 7 speaks of her many avatars through the three gunas. Verse 8 gives the dhyana of a three-eyed, lion-riding goddess with conch, discus and sword. Verse 9 says a mother protects children who have no other refuge even without being asked, so a bow is enough.

The tenth verse compares the hymn to fire on a heap of cotton, to the wish-giving kalpa tree and to Garuda before the serpent of Time.
