Masa Durgashtami: Monthly Worship of Goddess Durga
Masa Durgashtami is the monthly vratham dedicated to Goddess Durga, observed on the Shukla Paksha Ashtami of every Telugu month. Devotees fast and worship the Goddess on this day, praying for courage, protection and peace at home. The Ashtami that falls during Devi Navaratri in Ashwayuja masam is celebrated on a grand scale as Maha Durgashtami.
The Glory of Durga
According to the Devi Mahatmyam, when the buffalo demon Mahishasura defeated the devas and seized heaven, the combined radiance of the Trimurti and all the gods took shape as Goddess Durga. Armed with their weapons and riding a lion, she destroyed Mahishasura and restored dharma. Ashtami is considered especially powerful for Shakti worship, which is why devotees remember the Mother on this tithi every month. In the Telugu states, Kanaka Durgamma on Indrakeeladri in Vijayawada is the best-known Durga shrine.
Puja Vidhanam
- Bathe early, wear red or yellow clothes and clean the puja space.
- Apply pasupu and kumkuma to the Goddess's picture or idol and decorate with red flowers such as mandara (hibiscus) and kanakambaram.
- Light the lamp and incense, take sankalpam and recite the Durga Ashtottaram or Lalitha Sahasranamam.
- If possible, read a chapter of the Devi Mahatmyam (Durga Saptashati) or a Durga stotram.
- Offer pulihora, payasam, vadapappu or panakam as naivedyam and perform harathi.
- Offering pasupu, kumkuma and tamboolam to married women is considered auspicious.
Fasting Guidelines
Many devotees fast from morning until the evening puja. Some take only fruits and milk, while others eat one simple sattvic meal. Avoiding onion, garlic and non-vegetarian food, keeping a calm mind and speaking kindly are part of the vratham. Choose a fasting method that suits your health.
Significance
Observing Durgashtami regularly is believed to remove fear and obstacles and to protect the family. Monthly worship builds steady devotion and brings a sense of strength and peace to the home.
May the compassion of Jaganmata Durgamma be with you always.
