Ganesh Chaturthi
Ganesh Chaturthi is one of the grandest Hindu festivals, celebrating the birth of Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles and god of wisdom. It is observed in the Bhadrapada month (Shukla Paksha Chaturthi) and continues for ten days, concluding with Ganesh Visarjan (immersion) on Ananta Chaturdashi.
The Birth of Lord Ganesha
According to Hindu legend, while Goddess Parvati was bathing, she created a boy from the turmeric paste on her body and brought him to life. She asked him to guard her door.
When Lord Shiva tried to enter, the boy stopped him. Angered, Shiva severed the boy’s head. Seeing Parvati’s grief, Shiva replaced the head with that of an elephant and revived him. Thus was born Ganesha, the most beloved deity.
