Vijaya Ekadashi - Lord Rama's Victory-Bestowing, All-Conquering Ekadashi

The Krishna Paksha Ekadashi tithi of Phalguna month is called Vijaya Ekadashi or Phalguna Krishna Ekadashi. "Vijaya" means victory. Observing this sacred Ekadashi fast brings victory, Vijayashree (goddess of victory), and Vijaya Lakshmi (goddess of triumphant prosperity) in all spheres of life. According to scriptures, Lord Rama observed this Vijaya Ekadashi vrat on the suggestion of Sage Bakadalbhya before waging war against Ravana in Lanka, crossed the ocean, conquered Ravana, and regained Sita Devi. Therefore, this Ekadashi is also called Rama Ekadashi.

Observing a fast on Vijaya Ekadashi, worshipping Lord Vishnu, worshipping Goddess Lakshmi, and listening to the Vijaya Ekadashi vrat katha brings victory over enemies, removal of obstacles, Vijayashree, spiritual purification, and the path to moksha.

Significance of Vijaya Ekadashi

Vijaya Ekadashi is one of the most special among all 24 Ekadashis. "Vijaya" means victory - observing this Ekadashi fast brings victory in every sphere of life. Obstacles are removed, enemies are destroyed, and difficulties are resolved. Spiritual growth, purification of mind, body, and soul occur.

As Lord Narayana told Arjuna in the Bhagavad Gita: "O Arjuna! The name of the Krishna Paksha Ekadashi of Phalguna month is Vijaya Ekadashi. Through this fast, a person obtains Vijayashree (victory). All sins are eliminated by listening to and reading the glorification of this Vijaya Ekadashi".

Vijaya Ekadashi has immense significance because it was observed by Lord Rama himself. In Treta Yuga, Lord Rama observed this Ekadashi vrat before waging war against Ravana, crossed the ocean, conquered Lanka, and regained Sita Devi. Therefore, this Ekadashi is extremely powerful.

The Puranic Legend of Vijaya Ekadashi - Lord Rama's Victory

Abduction of Sita Devi:

In Treta Yuga, Lord Ramachandra, Sita Devi, and Lakshmana were residing like ascetics in Panchavati during their fourteen-year forest exile. Then Ravana abducted Sita Devi. Lord Rama was deeply grieved at losing his beloved Sita.

While searching for his beloved Sita, Lord Rama and Lakshmana wandered through the forests. Then they met the dying Jatayu. Jatayu narrated to Lord Rama how Ravana abducted Sita Devi, took his last breath in Lord Rama's lap, and attained Vaikuntha.

Later, Lord Rama and Lakshmana befriended Sugriva and there killed the wicked Vali. Hanuman went to Lanka and returned to inform that Sita Devi was imprisoned in Ashoka Vana in Lanka.

The Ocean Problem:

After learning the entire situation, Lord Ramachandra, with Sugriva's consent, set out toward Lanka with his Vanara Sena (army of monkeys and bears). Reaching the seashore, Lord Rama saw the vast ocean full of crocodiles and said to Lakshmana:

"O Lakshmana! How will we cross this vast ocean full of countless crocodiles and predatory creatures?"

Sage Bakadalbhya's Suggestion:

After listening to Lord Rama's words, Lakshmana said: "Brother! You are Purana Purushottama Adipurusha (Supreme Primordial Being). Nothing is hidden from you. Half a yojana from here, on Kumari Island, is the ashram of Sage Bakadalbhya. He is the knower of many names of Brahman. Only he can tell you solutions for your victory".

Lord Rama went with his army to Sage Bakadalbhya's ashram. The sage was overjoyed to see his beloved devotee Lord Rama. Lord Rama respectfully said:

"O Rishivar! I have come here with my army. I am going to Lanka with the desire to conquer the demon king Ravana. Please tell me some way to cross the ocean. This is my purpose in coming to you."

The Vijaya Ekadashi Vrat:

After hearing the sage's sweet words, Sage Bakadalbhya said:

"O Lord Ramachandra! If you observe the Vijaya Ekadashi vrat of Krishna Paksha of Phalguna month, you will certainly cross the ocean and will be victorious in war also. O Maryada Purushottama! For this fast, make a Kalasha of gold, silver, copper, or clay on Dashami day".

The sage explained the Vijaya Ekadashi vrat procedure to Lord Rama in detail:

Dashami Day Preparations:

On Dashami day, prepare a kalasha (sacred pot) of gold, silver, copper, or clay. Fill the kalasha with water and cover with yellow cloth. Place a coconut on top of the kalasha. Arrange mango leaves around the kalasha. Place yellow flowers, fruits, and sesame seeds in front of the kalasha.

Ekadashi Day Procedure:

On Ekadashi day, wake up before sunrise and take a sacred bath. Worship Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi with yellow clothes and yellow flowers. Light incense and lamps. Observe fast. Chant Vishnu Sahasranama and Hare Krishna Maha Mantra. Keep night vigil.

Lord Rama's Victory:

Lord Rama followed every word of the Vijaya Ekadashi vrat told by the sage. With the merit of that vrat, Lord Rama was able to cross the ocean with the Vanara Sena (army of monkeys). Nala helped construct the bridge (Rama Setu). Ultimately, he defeated the powerful Lanka king Ravana in battle and regained his beloved Sita Devi.

Lord Rama's observance of Vijaya Ekadashi vrat, crossing the ocean, conquering Ravana, and regaining Sita Devi is testimony to the significance of Vijaya Ekadashi. Therefore, this Ekadashi is extremely powerful. Every devotee desiring victory should observe this Ekadashi.
