Meaning

This hymn describes the fierce and protective form of Goddess Pratyangira Devi,
who stands as the cosmic force of destruction against evil, and protection for the righteous.
    •    She has a thousand faces, fiery eyes, and blazing tongue (Jvālājihvā).
    •    Her arms wield a mace, a thunderbolt, a skull-staff, and Rudra’s fire.
    •    Serpents like Ananta, Takshaka, Vasuki adorn her body as ornaments.
    •    She grants courage to her devotees’ armies and strikes fear into the enemy forces.
    •    Those who worship her feet are protected from all — demons, spirits, black magic, and curses.

🕉️ No force in the universe — Yākṣa, Rākṣasa, Śākini, Bhūta, or any occult power — can harm a devotee protected by this Kavacham.

Frequently asked questions

How many verses are in the Trailokya Vijaya Pratyangira Kavacham?
The text given here has seven verses. The first six are short anushtubh shlokas describing the goddess, and the seventh, in the long shardulavikridita metre, declares her protection. It takes two or three minutes to recite.
Which serpents adorn the goddess in the Pratyangira Kavacham?
Verse 4 makes Ananta and Takshaka her bracelets, Vasuki her necklace and Karkati her girdle. In verse 5 the serpents Padma and Mahapadma are her anklets and Gonasa her earring, and she wears a garland of heads.
What weapons does the Pratyangira Kavacham place in her hands?
Verse 2 says she instantly binds the cruel with serpent nooses. Verse 3 gives her a staff that crushes enemies in the left hand and a fearsome vajra in the right, along with a preta's head.
What does the seventh verse of the Trailokya Vijaya Kavacham promise?
It says that no yakshas, rakshasa hosts, shakinis, chetaka spirits, great bhutas or rival mantras and yantras can overcome those who worship Pratyangira's feet. This text has no separate phala shruti; that verse stands in its place.
Why is this Pratyangira Kavacham called Trailokya Vijaya?
Its closing line names it Trailokya Vijaya, victory over the three worlds. Verse 6 fits the title, describing the goddess as giving fearlessness to her own army and terror to the opposing one. The kavacham does not name its author.
