Shravana Putrada Ekadashi
Shravana Putrada Ekadashi: A Vrata for the Blessing of Children
Shravana Putrada Ekadashi is observed on Shravana Shukla Ekadashi, the eleventh day of the bright fortnight of Shravana. Couples who wish for children, and parents praying for their children's wellbeing, worship Lord Vishnu and fast on this day. It is also called Pavitropana Ekadashi; another Putrada Ekadashi falls in Pushya month.
The Story of King Mahijit
King Mahijit ruled Mahishmati with righteousness and cared for his people like his own children, yet he had no child. Moved by his sorrow, his ministers and subjects went to the forest to meet Sage Lomasha. Through his divine vision the sage saw that in a past life the king had stopped a thirsty cow from drinking water, and that this fault stood in the way. He advised that if the people observed Shravana Shukla Ekadashi and offered its merit to the king, the obstacle would be removed. They did so, and the queen gave birth to a son, says the Purana.
Puja Steps
- The couple bathes early and makes the sankalpa together.
- Decorate a picture of Bala Krishna or Lord Vishnu with flowers and light the lamp.
- Offer tulasi, yellow flowers and panchamritam.
- Chant the Santana Gopala mantra or Vishnu Sahasranamam.
- Offer fruits, milk, butter and payasam, and listen to the Putrada Ekadashi katha.
- On Dwadashi, feeding a cow and giving fruits to children are considered auspicious.
Fasting Rules
A fast with fruits and milk, avoiding rice and grains, is common. Elders say it is best when both husband and wife observe it. Pregnant women and those with health issues should avoid strict fasting and focus on puja and nama smarana. Break the fast on Dwadashi within the parana time.
Significance
Shravana is the month of vrathams and nomulu in Telugu homes, and this Ekadashi is kept especially for family welfare and the health of children. The story also reminds us that even a small unkindness, like denying water to a cow, has consequences, and that compassion to animals matters.
May Sri Hari fill every home with the laughter and joy of children.
