Mangala Gowri Vratham is the worship of Goddess Parvati as Mangala Gowri, performed by newly married women on every Tuesday of Shravana masam. It is done for the husband's health and long life and for saubhagyam in married life. In many Telugu families the vratham is kept for five years after marriage, with an udyapana in the fifth year.
Who performs Mangala Gowri Vratham and when?
It is mainly performed by newly married women, starting from the first Shravana masam after the wedding. Shravana has four or five Tuesdays, and the puja is done on each one. Many families do it at the bride's parents' home in the first year and at the in-laws' home in later years. Practices about the number of years and the place differ, so follow your elders' advice.
Tuesday is considered auspicious for Parvati and for mangala karyas. In Shravana, Fridays are known for Varalakshmi puja and Tuesdays for Mangala Gowri puja.

Mangala Gowri Vratham katha in brief
The story varies a little by region; this is the version most often told. A wealthy merchant without children prayed for divine grace and was blessed with a son, but it became known that the boy would have a short life. When he came of age, he was married to a girl whose mother had devotedly observed the Mangala Gowri Vratham, and the girl herself worshipped Mangala Gowri with great faith. By her devotion and the merit of her mother's vratham, Gowri Devi blessed them and the young man's life was saved. The story says women have kept this vratham for their husbands' long life ever since.
The message of the katha: prayer offered with discipline, faith and love for family receives divine grace.
What is vayanam and how is it given?
Vayanam is the gift given to a muttaiduva after the puja as the Goddess's prasadam. In many families the bride gives it to her mother or a senior muttaiduva at home. It usually includes turmeric, kumkum, tambulam, fruit, a blouse piece, bangles and the naivedyam items. The giver applies bottu to the muttaiduva, offers the vayanam holding the end of her saree, and touches her feet for blessings.
When and how is udyapana done?
After five years, the vratham is completed with an udyapana in the final year. Usually more muttaiduvas are invited, given vayanam, and a special puja is done. Udyapana customs vary widely, so do it with your purohit's guidance.
A note on health
If your family keeps a fast or one meal on this day, pregnant women and anyone with health concerns need not fast strictly. Devoted puja is what matters; consult a doctor if needed.
