Narasimha Jayanti: The Lord Who Protects His Devotees

Narasimha Jayanti falls on Vaishakha Shukla Chaturdashi and celebrates the appearance of Lord Narasimha, the fourth avatar of Vishnu, half man and half lion. He emerged from a pillar at dusk to protect the child devotee Prahlada and destroy the demon king Hiranyakashipu. Devotees fast during the day and worship the Lord at sunset, the time of His appearance.

The Story of Prahlada

Hiranyakashipu won a boon from Brahma that he could not be killed by man or beast, by day or night, inside or outside, on earth or in the sky, by any weapon. Proud of this, he demanded to be worshipped as God. His young son Prahlada, however, was a devoted Vishnu bhakta. The king tried to kill him in many ways, but Prahlada survived each time by the Lord's grace. When Hiranyakashipu mockingly asked whether Vishnu was in a pillar and struck it, Lord Narasimha burst out. At twilight, sitting on the threshold, He placed the demon on His lap and ended him with His claws, honouring every condition of the boon. He then calmed down at Prahlada's loving prayers.

Narasimha Kshetrams in the Telugu States

The Telugu land is especially rich in Narasimha temples. Yadagirigutta in Telangana, Simhachalam near Visakhapatnam, Ahobilam with its nine Narasimha shrines in the Nallamala hills, Mangalagiri near Vijayawada and Dharmapuri on the Godavari are all well known, and they see special abhishekams and utsavams on Narasimha Jayanti.

Puja Vidhanam

  • Bathe early and take sankalpam for the vratham; many devotees fast until the evening puja.
  • In the evening, at sandhya time, place a picture of Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy and decorate it with flowers and tulasi.
  • Perform abhishekam or simple puja, and recite the Narasimha Ashtottaram, Narasimha Kavacham or the Rina Vimochana Narasimha Stotram.
  • Offer panakam, vadapappu, majjiga and fruits as naivedyam; cooling offerings suit the hot Vaishakha season.
  • Read the story of Prahlada with the family, especially the children.
  • Break the fast after the puja, or the next morning as per family custom.

Significance

Narasimha Jayanti reminds us that the Lord can appear anywhere to protect a sincere devotee, and that no boon or power can shield arrogance and cruelty. Devotees pray to Narasimha to remove fear, enemies, debts and obstacles, and for the courage that Prahlada showed.

May Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy protect you and your family always.
