Lalita Jayanti

Lalita Jayanti - The Divine Manifestation of Tripurasundari, Festival of Supreme Shakti

The Purnima tithi of Magha month is called Lalita Jayanti or Shodashi Jayanti. On this sacred day, Adiparashakti (Primordial Supreme Power) manifested in the form of Tripurasundari as Sri Lalita Mahatripurasundari Devi and destroyed the demon Bhandasura. Magha Purnima is also called Maha Maghi. On this day, sacred river baths, worship, and recitation of Lalita Sahasranama bestow immense merit.

Sri Lalita Mahatripurasundari is the second form among the Dasha Mahavidyas (ten great wisdom goddesses). She is the second manifestation of the three primary forms of Adi Shakti known as Tripuratrayam (Bala, Tripurasundari, Tripurabhairavi). She is the presiding deity of Sri Chakra and the deity of the Panchadashakshari Mantra (15-syllable mantra). She embodies the union of Shiva and Shakti, having Kameshwara (form of Lord Shiva) as her consort, representing the fundamental cause of creation, preservation, and dissolution of the universe.

Magha Month - The Month of Yajna

"Magha" means yajna (sacred fire ritual). Magha month is the most exalted month for performing yajnas, yagas, and sacred divine activities. Though all days of this month are special, Magha Purnima is even more significant. It is called Maha Maghi. Sacred texts state that ocean baths, river baths, and worship performed on this day bestow immense fruits.

Lalita Devi - Form of Adiparashakti

Sri Lalita Mahatripurasundari is the primordial mother of all powers, the embodiment of all deities. She radiates in Aruna Varna (reddish glow, the color of the dawn sky). With four arms holding Pasha (noose/bondage), Ankusha (goad/control), Pushpabana (flower arrows), and Dhanus (sugarcane bow), she bestows Abhaya (fearlessness) upon devotees. She is worshipped as the mother who removes fear and grants peace.

Lalita Devi represents Shodashi (the 16-year-old maiden), symbolizing eternal youth. She possesses an extremely beautiful and gentle form. She appears wearing a crown of nine gems, adorned with precious ornaments, seated on the Sri Chakraraja Ratha (chariot of the Sri Chakra king).

Among the Dasha Mahavidyas (Kali, Tara, Tripurasundari/Lalita, Bhuvaneshwari, Tripurabhairavi, Chinnamasta, Dhumavati, Bagala, Matangi, Kamala), Lalita Devi holds the most exalted position. She is the perfect synthesis of grace, power, compassion, and authority.

The Story of Bhandasura - Puranic Legend

The Incineration of Kamadeva:

Once upon a time, Parvati Devi was performing penance to marry Lord Shiva. But Shiva was seated in deep meditation. The gods sent Kamadeva (Manmatha, god of love) to break Shiva's meditation. Kamadeva tried to disturb Shiva's meditation with his flower arrows. In anger, Shiva opened his third eye and reduced Kamadeva to ashes.

The Origin of Bhandasura:

After Kamadeva was incinerated, his wife Rati Devi was deeply grieved. She prayed to Shiva to revive her husband. Shiva looked at Kamadeva's ashes. From those ashes emerged Bhandasura, a terrifying demon.

Shiva's Boon:

Bhandasura performed severe penance for Lord Shiva. Pleased with his penance, Lord Shiva appeared and asked him to request a boon. Bhandasura requested two boons:

  1. Half the strength of whoever fights him should come to him
  2. He should be immune to all weapons used by enemies

Shiva granted these boons. Additionally, he gave Bhandasura the demon city of Shoonya and the authority to rule unopposed for 60,000 years.

Bhandasura's Tyranny:

With the arrogance of these boons, Bhandasura wreaked havoc across the three worlds. Due to the fear of his powerful boons, no god, human, or demon could confront him. He created two brothers Vishukra and Vishanga, and a sister Dhumini. He created four wives and with them had thirty sons and a daughter named Rashmiprabhaa.

The gods wandered in fear. Vishnu with his Maya made Bhandasura immersed in sensual pleasures.

Prayers of the Gods - Worship of Parashakti:

Unable to bear Bhandasura's oppression, following Sage Narada's suggestion, Indra and other gods worshipped Adiparashakti. When they performed a great Mahayaga, Sri Lalita Mahatripurasundari Devi emerged from the sacrificial fire. She then presided over the Sri Chakra and prepared to destroy Bhandasura.

The Great War - Lalita and Bhandasura

Lalita's Army:

Lalita Devi created a massive army. She herself sat on the Sri Chakraraja Ratha and set out for battle. Her army was led by prominent deities:

  • Sampatkari Devi - on an elephant vehicle
  • Ashwarudha Devi - on a horse vehicle
  • Varahi Devi - driving the chariot of boars
  • Matangi Devi - as chief minister, driving the chariot of elephants

The Battle Account:

According to custom, Bhandasura's thirty sons first came to battle. A fierce war ensued. Lalita Devi's daughter Bala Tripurasundari destroyed all thirty sons of Bhandasura. Matangi Devi killed Vishanga, and Varahi Devi killed Vishukra.

However, before dying, Vishukra deployed the Jaya-Vighna-Yantra. This froze everyone except Lalita, Bala, Kameshwara Shiva, Matangi, and Varahi.

Creation of Maha Ganapati and Maha Subrahmanya:

Lalita Devi, together with her consort Kameshwara Shiva, created Maha Ganapati. Maha Ganapati destroyed Vishukra's yantra and revived everyone. Additionally, Lalita Devi also created Maha Subrahmanya (supreme form of Kartikeya).

Creation of Dashavatara:

Bhandasura revived the demons killed by Vishnu in his ten incarnations (Matsya, Kurma, Varaha, Narasimha, Vamana, Parashurama, Rama avatars). Lalita Devi created each Dashavatara form from her fingernails and destroyed those demons again.

Slaying of Bhandasura:

Lalita Devi repelled every attack of Bhandasura. Finally, with the Maha Pashupatastra, she completely destroyed his army. Ultimately, she wielded the Kameshwarastra and destroyed Bhandasura, completely annihilating the city of Shoonya.

After Bhandasura's death, Lalita Devi revived Kamadeva from his ashes. Kamadeva and Rati Devi regained their marital bond. Harmony returned to the world.

Sri Lalita Sahasranama - Hymn of the Gods

After the war, Lalita Devi was in her fierce form (Raudra Rupa). The names chanted by the gods and sages in prayer to pacify her fierce form became the "Sri Lalita Sahasranama". This Sahasranama contains a thousand divine names of Lalita Devi. Devotees believe that reciting the Sahasranama after she withdrew her fierce form in response to the gods' prayers causes her compassion to flow upon devotees.
