Lalitha Sahasranamam is a hymn of one thousand names of Sri Lalitha Parameshwari. It appears in the Uttara Khanda of the Brahmanda Purana, within the Lalitopakhyana, where Lord Hayagriva teaches it to Sage Agastya. The core practice is to recite it with cleanliness, focus and correct pronunciation, especially on Fridays, Pournami and during Navaratri.

How did Lalitha Sahasranamam originate?

According to tradition, Lord Hayagriva, a form of Vishnu, narrated the glory of Lalitha Devi and the story of her victory over Bhandasura to Sage Agastya. He taught many hymns and names of the Goddess but held back the Sahasranamam. Only after Agastya humbly asked again and again did Hayagriva reveal this secret hymn.

The Purana says the names were composed by the Vagdevatas, led by Vashini, at the Goddess's command, and recited in her court. That is why it is also called the "Rahasya Nama Sahasram", the thousand secret names. The Lalitha Trishati also belongs to the same Hayagriva–Agastya dialogue.

What makes Lalitha Sahasranamam special?

  • No repeated names: Tradition holds that no name occurs twice among the thousand.
  • No filler words: It is known for not using particles like "cha" or "tu" just to fit the metre.
  • A clear sequence: The names move through the Goddess's emergence, her form from head to foot, Sripuram, the battle with Bhandasura, kundalini yoga and her formless nature.
  • Commentary: Bhaskararaya's "Saubhagya Bhaskaram" is its most celebrated commentary.

The hymn opens with "Sri Mata Sri Maharajni Srimat Simhasaneshwari". The first name, Sri Mata, presents the Goddess as the Mother of the whole universe.
