Apara Ekadashi

Apara Ekadashi: The Fast of Boundless Merit

Apara Ekadashi is observed on Vaishakha Bahula (Krishna) Ekadashi, the eleventh day of the waning fortnight of Vaishakha in the Telugu calendar. "Apara" means limitless, and the vrata is believed to bestow limitless merit. In some regions it is also called Achala Ekadashi.

The Vrata Katha

Long ago there was a righteous king named Mahidhwaja. His younger brother Vajradhwaja, consumed by jealousy, murdered him and buried his body under a peepal tree. Having died an untimely death, the king became a restless spirit that haunted the tree and frightened travellers. One day Sage Dhaumya passed by and, through his spiritual vision, understood everything. Out of compassion the sage himself observed Apara Ekadashi and offered its merit to the king. With that merit, Mahidhwaja was released from the spirit form and reached the higher worlds.

The story teaches that the merit of an Ekadashi can help not only us but also others, including departed souls.

Puja Steps

  • Take a head bath early on Ekadashi and make the sankalpa for the fast.
  • Worship Lord Vishnu, especially remembering him as Trivikrama, a feature of this Ekadashi.
  • Offer tulasi, flowers, akshata, incense and a lamp.
  • Chant Vishnu Sahasranamam or "Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya".
  • Read the Apara Ekadashi katha and offer fruits or panakam as naivedyam.
  • On Dwadashi morning, do a short puja, feed someone if you can, and then break the fast.

Fasting Guidelines

Rice, dals, onion and garlic are avoided. A fruit-and-milk fast is common. Avoiding lies, anger and gossip is as much part of the vrata as avoiding food. As this is the peak of summer, keep yourself hydrated; those with health issues should fast only as far as they can.

Significance

Elders say that observing this vrata with sincere repentance lightens the burden of mistakes made knowingly or unknowingly. Some families keep it for the peace of their ancestors. Donating a water pot, an umbrella or footwear on this day is considered especially good in the hot Vaishakha season.

May Sri Hari bless everyone with boundless peace and wellbeing through Apara Ekadashi.
