Meaning

The Lord who reclines at Srirangam

Ranganatha is Vishnu lying on the serpent Adishesha, the form worshipped at Srirangam in Tamil Nadu, on the island the Kaveri and Kollidam rivers enclose. This namavali gives 108 names in the familiar Om ... Namah pattern, and the very first, Srirangashayine, names him as the one who rests at Sriranga.

How the names move

The opening names stress his bond with Lakshmi and with his devotees: Srikanta, Sriprada and Shritavatsala, the one who is tender towards those who take refuge in him. A long middle stretch runs through well-known Vishnu names such as Narayana, Govinda, Keshava, Damodara and Madhusudana, with the avatars woven in. Narahari, Vamana and Trivikrama sit beside Kakutstha and Rama, while Krishna is recalled as Nandasunu and as Kaliyoragamardana, the one who subdued the serpent Kaliya.

Close to the ninetieth name the list calls him Shankara, Shiva and Maheshwara, reading those words in their root sense of the auspicious, great lord. Near the end comes Kshirabdhishayana, the one asleep on the ocean of milk, which mirrors the opening name. After Pakshindravahana, the rider of Garuda, the last five names salute the conch, discus, bow, sword and mace.

Using it in worship

This version carries no dhyana verse and no phala shruti, so it is used as a plain archana, one name with each offering of flower, tulasi or akshata. Families devoted to Srirangam chant it on Ekadashi days and especially on Vaikuntha Ekadashi.

Frequently asked questions

Which name opens the Sri Ranganatha Ashtottara Shatanamavali?
The list opens with Om Srirangashayine Namah, a salute to the Lord who reclines at Srirangam. That first name ties all 108 names to the reclining form of Vishnu on Adishesha worshipped at Srirangam.
Why does a Ranganatha namavali include names of Rama and Krishna?
Ranganatha is Vishnu himself, so his avatars are named freely: Kakutstha and Rama for the prince of Ayodhya, and Nandasunu, Rukminivallabha and Kaliyoragamardana for Krishna. Narahari, Vamana and Trivikrama also appear.
Why do Shankara, Shiva and Maheshwara appear among the Ranganatha 108 names?
Names 88 to 91 use these words in their root sense, the one who brings good and the great lord, and apply them to Vishnu. The Vishnu Sahasranama does the same with several names usually linked to Shiva.
How does the Sri Ranganatha Ashtottara Shatanamavali end?
The last five names salute the weapons he holds: Chakrapani for the discus, Shankhadharin for the conch, Sharngin for the Sharnga bow, Khadgin for the sword and Gadadhara for the mace. This version has no phala shruti and closes with a simple iti line.
How long does the Ranganatha Ashtottaram take, and when is it usually chanted?
All 108 names take about ten minutes at an unhurried pace, a little longer if a tulasi leaf is offered with each name. Devotees chant it on Ekadashi days, above all on Vaikuntha Ekadashi, the biggest festival of the year at Srirangam.
