The usual way to reach Sabarimala is to take a train to Chengannur or Kottayam, or fly into Kochi or Thiruvananthapuram, and continue by KSRTC bus to Pamba. Private vehicles may go only up to the Nilakkal base camp, from where KSRTC chain buses run to Pamba. From Pamba it is a walk of about 5 km uphill to Sannidhanam.
The journey to Sabarimala is part of the pilgrimage, with the buses, the sharanam calls on the platforms and the climb all belonging to the yatra as much as the darshan. Here is how the route actually works, stage by stage, so you can plan it calmly.
By train: Chengannur and Kottayam
Chengannur is the nearest railway station, about 85 km from Sabarimala according to Kerala Tourism. Kottayam is the other main railhead. KSRTC buses run from both stations to Pamba, and during the season the stations are full of swamis, so finding the bus is not difficult.
For readers in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, the regular option is the 17230 Sabari Express, which runs daily from Secunderabad to Thiruvananthapuram and stops at both Kottayam and Chengannur. South Central Railway also runs Sabarimala special trains every season; they are usually announced between October and December, so keep an eye on IRCTC and SCR announcements. Readers from other parts of India can check IRCTC for trains to Chengannur or Kottayam.
By air: Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram
Kochi airport is about 154 km away and Thiruvananthapuram about 170 km, according to Kerala Tourism. From either city you continue by road. Flying saves time, but remember that the road part is still long, so do not plan a same-day return flight in the season.
By road: Nilakkal is as far as your vehicle goes
Private vehicles are allowed only up to the Nilakkal base camp, where there is parking. From Nilakkal, KSRTC runs chain buses to Pamba continuously. One small but useful detail: TDB charges 25% extra for parking at Nilakkal for vehicles without FASTag, so make sure your car or traveller has one active before you leave home.
For the 2026–27 season, KSRTC plans 950 buses, 390 in the Mandala phase and 560 in the Makaravilakku phase, including an uninterrupted Nilakkal–Pamba chain service. In 2024 KSRTC allowed groups of 40 or more to pre-book buses; check this season's announcement.
Your Virtual-Q coupon is checked at the counters at Nilakkal or Pamba, so keep the original ID and coupon ready before you get off the bus. If you have not booked yet, our Sabarimala Virtual-Q booking guide walks you through it.
From Pamba to Sannidhanam
From Pamba it is about 5 km uphill to Sannidhanam. The usual path climbs Neelimala, and it is steep in parts. There is also the Swami Ayyappan Road, which is gentler and is used by tractors and by many pilgrims for the return. Go at your own pace, rest when you need to, and keep the sharanam going. Experienced Guru Swamys advise keeping the mind on the Lord's names rather than on the distance, and the Ayyappa Sharanu Gosha is made for exactly this.
Rain is possible during the season, so a raincoat or umbrella should be in your bag.
The traditional forest paths
The Erumeli route (the "big path")
The traditional kananapatha runs from Erumeli through Perurthodu, Koyikkal kavu, Azhuthakadavu, Karimala, Cheriyanavattam and Valiyanavattam to Pamba. Kerala Tourism puts the whole Erumeli route at about 61 km including the climb. Entry to the forest path closes in the afternoon (4 pm, as per a 2024 report) and it closes earlier around Makaravilakku. This path is for those who are fit and travelling with an experienced Guru Swamy; do not attempt it casually.
The Pulmedu route
From Vandiperiyar, a route goes via Sathram and Pulmedu. It is about 12 km from Sathram to the temple, with Forest Department and Police checks along the way.
A sample plan from Hyderabad
This is the outline many groups from Hyderabad follow. Exact train times change, so check them on IRCTC when you book.
- Fix your darshan date using the Sabarimala opening dates for 2026–27 and book Virtual-Q for everyone in the group.
- Book the Sabari Express from Secunderabad to Kottayam or Chengannur, or one of the SCR specials if announced for your dates.
- From Kottayam or Chengannur, take a KSRTC bus to Pamba.
- If your group is driving instead, park at Nilakkal (with FASTag) and take the chain bus to Pamba.
- Complete Virtual-Q verification at the counter, then begin the climb to Sannidhanam with your irumudi.
- After darshan, return to Pamba, usually by the Swami Ayyappan Road, and take the bus back to your railhead.
Before you pack, read our irumudi and pilgrim rules, especially the High Court's ban on plastic in the irumudi. And if you are going for Makaravilakku, the Makaravilakku 2027 guide explains the movement restrictions on that day, which change the whole plan.
May your journey be smooth and your darshan peaceful. Swamiye Saranam Ayyappa.
