Shiva abhishekam at home is simple: place the Shiva lingam in a clean plate and, chanting Om Namah Shivaya, bathe it first with pure water, then with milk, curd, ghee, honey and sugar (panchamrutham), and finally with pure water again. Then offer vibhuti, sandal paste and bilva leaves, place naivedyam and show aarti. With cleanliness and sincerity, even a little water offered in abhishekam pleases Shiva.
Why and when is abhishekam done to Shiva?
A well-known saying goes, Alankara priyo Vishnuh, Abhisheka priyah Shivah: Vishnu loves adornment, Shiva loves abhishekam. Shiva holds Ganga in his matted locks, and devotees believe a steady stream of water upon him calms the mind and washes away sins. The dhara patra hanging above the lingam in Shiva temples expresses the same idea.
Abhishekam can be done on any day, but Mondays, Pradosha kalam (Trayodashi evening), Masa Shivaratri, Maha Shivaratri and the months of Karthika and Shravana are considered special. Many families also arrange abhishekam on birthdays, janma nakshatram days or griha pravesham.
Items needed
- A Shiva lingam (homes usually keep a small lingam or a bana lingam)
- A wide plate or panavattam to hold it
- A chembu, small bowls and a shankham if available
- Pure water, cow's milk, curd, ghee, honey and sugar
- Coconut water and sugarcane juice (optional)
- Vibhuti, sandal paste, akshatalu, bilva leaves and white flowers
- Deepam, incense, camphor, naivedyam and a clean cloth
Abhisheka dravyas and their traditional meaning
Tradition links each item with a particular blessing. These associations differ across texts and regions; the ones below are popular beliefs, not promises:
| Item | Traditionally associated with |
|---|---|
| Pure water | Peace of mind, purification |
| Cow's milk | Long life, well-being |
| Curd | Family happiness, welfare of children |
| Ghee | Prosperity, radiance |
| Honey | Sweet speech, harmony in relationships |
| Sugar | Joy, removal of sorrow |
| Sugarcane juice | Abundance |
| Coconut water | Calm and auspiciousness |
| Vibhuti | Detachment, wisdom |
None of these is compulsory. An abhishekam with pure water alone, done with devotion, is complete.
Step-by-step Shiva abhishekam at home
- Purity: bathe, wear clean clothes and clean the puja space.
- Deeparadhana: light the lamp and first remember Vighneswara.
- Sankalpam: mentally state your name, gotram and purpose; if unsure, simply pray for the family's welfare.
- Jalabhishekam: pour water slowly in a steady stream while chanting Om Namah Shivaya.
- Panchamrutha abhishekam: offer milk, curd, ghee, honey and sugar in turn; some rinse with a little water after each.
- Other items: coconut water or sugarcane juice if available.
- Shuddhodakam: rinse thoroughly with pure water and wipe with a soft cloth.
- Alankaram: apply vibhuti and sandal paste; offer bilva leaves and flowers.
- Naivedyam and aarti: offer fruits or payasam, show camphor aarti and bow.
Rudram and mantras: what if you do not know them?
The most celebrated chant for abhishekam is Sri Rudram (Namakam and Chamakam), from the Taittiriya Samhita of the Krishna Yajurveda. Abhishekam with Rudram is Rudrabhishekam, and with eleven recitations it is Ekadasha Rudrabhishekam. These are usually done with Vedic pandits, since correct svara and pronunciation matter.
If you do not know Rudram, do not worry. Elders say chanting the Panchakshari, Om Namah Shivaya, during abhishekam is the simplest and most powerful way. You can also recite Shiva Ashtottaram or Lingashtakam, or play a Rudram recitation while you perform the abhishekam.
Rules and precautions
- Bilva: offer untorn trifoliate bilva leaves, most dear to Shiva.
- What not to offer: mogali (ketaki) flower is traditionally not offered to Shiva; many families also avoid tulasi and kumkuma in Shiva puja. Follow family custom.
- Somasutram: tradition says not to cross the channel through which abhisheka water flows out, which is why only half pradakshina is done in Shiva temples.
- Lingam at home: elders usually suggest a small lingam with at least daily jalabhishekam and deepam; large lingams are generally for temples.
- Abhisheka theertham: take a little as prasadam and pour the rest into plants, not down a drain.
- Avoid waste: use milk and honey moderately; some donate milk or food to the needy alongside.
- Vessels: use silver, steel or brass for milk and curd; many avoid pouring milk from copper.
What if there is no lingam at home?
You can still offer abhishekam. In some traditions a small parthiva lingam is shaped from clean clay, worshipped with abhishekam for the day and then respectfully immersed in water or returned to the soil, especially in Shravana and Karthika. Another simple way is to visit a nearby Shiva temple and have the archaka perform abhishekam, or offer the milk and water you bring; follow each temple’s own rules. Involving children and chanting Om Namah Shivaya together helps devotion grow naturally.
