Bhadrachalam, on the banks of the Godavari in Telangana's Bhadradri Kothagudem district, is one of the most sacred Rama temples for Telugu people. The temple was built by Kancherla Gopanna, who became famous as Bhakta Ramadasu. Every year on Chaitra Shuddha Navami, that is Sri Rama Navami, the Sita Rama Kalyanam celebrated here is watched and followed in Telugu homes everywhere.
How did Bhadrachalam get its name?
According to the sthala purana, Bhadra, a son of Meru, performed long penance on the Godavari bank to see Sri Rama. Pleased with his devotion, the Lord appeared and granted that Bhadra himself would become the hill on which He would reside. The hill is therefore called Bhadradri and the town Bhadrachalam.
The main deity is unique. Rama appears with four arms, holding the conch and discus along with bow and arrow, with Sita seated on His left lap and Lakshmana beside Him. Devotees call this form Vaikuntha Rama or Rama Narayana, showing that Rama and Vishnu are one.
Another popular story tells of Pokala Dammakka, a devotee from a nearby village, to whom the Lord appeared in a dream and revealed that His idols lay in an anthill on the hill. She washed away the anthill with Godavari water, set up a small shelter and worshipped daily. That humble worship became the seed of the great temple.
Who was Kancherla Gopanna?
Kancherla Gopanna lived in the seventeenth century during the reign of Abul Hasan Tana Shah, the last Qutb Shahi Sultan of Golconda. His maternal uncles, Akkanna and Madanna, held high office in the court, and through them Gopanna was appointed tahsildar (revenue officer) of the Palvancha region.
A devoted Rama bhakta from childhood, Gopanna was moved to see the neglected shrine on the Bhadradri hill. He began building a proper temple with help from the people, and when funds fell short, tradition says he used the revenue he had collected. He built the gopuram, prakaram and mandapams, and had jewels made for Sita, Lakshmana and Rama.
Years in prison
Accused of spending state money without permission, Gopanna was imprisoned in Golconda Fort. Tradition says he suffered there for about twelve years. The keertanas he sang in that prison, pleading with Rama, arguing with Him and reminding Him of the jewels he had offered, still move listeners deeply.
The story of Ramoji and Lakshmoji
Unable to bear His devotee's suffering, Rama and Lakshmana are said to have gone to Tana Shah disguised as servants named Ramoji and Lakshmoji, paid the full amount in gold coins and taken a receipt. The next morning the Sultan saw the coins, realised it was a divine leela, released Gopanna and honoured the temple. From then on Gopanna was known as Ramadasu, the servant of Rama.
Why is the Sri Rama Navami Kalyanam at Bhadrachalam special?
The Sita Rama Kalyanam on Chaitra Shuddha Navami is one of the best-known Rama wedding festivals in India. It is said to have been celebrated grandly since Ramadasu's time, and the custom of rulers sending pearl talambralu (muthyala talambralu) began then. Even today the government presents silk vastrams and pearl talambralu on behalf of the people.
- Edurkolu: the ceremonial welcome between the bride's and groom's sides before the wedding.
- Kalyana Mahotsavam: the Vedic wedding with mangalya dharana and talambralu.
- Pattabhishekam: Sri Rama's coronation festival on the following day.
- Talambralu prasadam: devotees believe keeping the wedding talambralu at home is auspicious and blesses those awaiting marriage.
Many families who cannot travel watch the live telecast and at the same time offer panakam and vadapappu to Sita Rama in their own puja room.
What makes Ramadasu keertanas so special?
Ramadasu's songs are in simple Telugu and pour the devotee's heart out before Rama: love, sulking, questioning and complete surrender all appear in them. Carnatic musicians, bhajana groups and Harikatha artists sing them widely, and later composers such as Tyagaraja remembered Ramadasu with reverence.
| Famous keertana | Theme in brief |
|---|---|
| Paluke Bangaramayena | The devotee's pain that the Lord will not speak to him |
| Ikshvaku Kula Tilaka | A plea from prison recalling the jewels he offered |
| E Teeruga Nanu Daya Choochedavo | An anguished prayer for compassion |
| Adigo Bhadradri | A description of the glory of Bhadradri |
| Ramajogi Mandu Konare | Rama nama as the medicine for worldly suffering |
The Dasarathi Shatakam, with the refrain "Dasarathi Karunapayonidhi", is also attributed to Ramadasu and is a well-loved work of Telugu shataka literature.
What should pilgrims know before visiting Bhadrachalam?
- Traditionally, pilgrims bathe in the Godavari first and then climb up for darshan.
- Look for displays at the temple about Ramadasu's life and the jewels he offered.
- Parnasala, believed to be where Sita and Rama stayed during the exile, is nearby and worth visiting.
- Sri Rama Navami and Vaikuntha Ekadashi bring huge crowds; check darshan and stay details through official temple sources in advance.
- Wear traditional clothes and follow the temple's rules.
How can families remember Ramadasu at home?
On Sri Rama Navami, garland a Sita Rama picture, do deeparadhana and sing Ramadasu keertanas together. Telling children the Ramoji and Lakshmoji story passes on devotion, honesty and surrender naturally. A few minutes of Rama nama japa each day is the simple path Ramadasu himself showed.
