Meaning

The “Sri Vaidyanathashtakam” praises Lord Vaidyanatha—Shiva in His divine form as the supreme healer. He is worshipped by Rama, Lakshmana, Jatayu, Subrahmanya, Surya, and Kuja. As the compassionate Neelakantha, He removes all forms of suffering and grants healing to all beings.

The hymn describes Him as the three-eyed Lord who holds the Ganga in His matted locks, the destroyer of Kama and Kala, and the one adored by all gods. He manifests directly in the human world to bless devotees and eliminate evil.

He is beloved by devotees, the destroyer of Tripurasura, the wielder of the Pinaka bow, and the remover of all wickedness. He is the destroyer of diseases arising from vata, pitta, and kapha and is praised by great sages.

Lord Vaidyanatha brings speech, vision, hearing, and movement even to beings deprived of them. He cures leprosy and all severe disorders. He is the supreme Brahman known through Vedanta, worshipped by yogis, and the embodiment of the Trimurti, having a thousand divine names.

He removes fear, sorrow, and negative forces. He blesses devotees with the sacred mud of His divine tirtha and grants spiritual and physical well-being. As Neelakantha and Vrishadhvaja, He bestows good progeny, family welfare, and prosperity.

The final verse declares that chanting the three sacred names—Bālāmīkeśa, Vaidyeśa, Bhavarogahara—daily destroys great diseases and brings complete healing.

Benefits:

• Heals physical and mental diseases
• Brings long life, health, and strength
• Protects from negative energies and afflictions
• Bestows family prosperity and positive outcomes
• Grants peace, clarity, and Shiva’s divine grace

Frequently asked questions

Who is said to have worshipped Shiva in the first verse of the Vaidyanatha Ashtakam?
Verse 1 names Sri Rama, Saumitri (Lakshmana), Jatayu, the Vedas, six-faced Skanda, Surya and Kuja, the planet Mars. The same devotees appear in the temple legend of Vaitheeswaran Koil in Tamil Nadu, where Shiva is worshipped as Vaidyanatha.
What are the three names in the closing verse of the Sri Vaidyanatha Ashtakam?
The ninth verse asks the reader to repeat Balambikesha, Vaidyesha and Bhavarogahara every day, and calls this japa a remover of great illness. Balambikesha means the lord of Balambika, the Devi worshipped beside Vaidyanatha.
Which illnesses does the Vaidyanatha Ashtakam mention?
Verse 4 speaks of diseases arising from vata and the other doshas, and verse 5 names kushtha and other grave diseases, praising Shiva for giving speech, hearing, sight and movement to those without them. Devotees chant it alongside medical treatment, never in place of it.
What does verse 7 of the Vaidyanatha Ashtakam say about sacred soil and ash?
It says Shiva removes the suffering, fear and spirit affliction of those who apply the earth and bhasma of his own tirtha to their bodies. At Vaitheeswaran Koil a small pellet made from temple ash and soil is still handed out as prasadam.
How long does the Vaidyanatha Ashtakam take and on which days is it chanted?
Eight verses ending in Sri Vaidyanathaya namah shivaya, plus one phala verse, take about three minutes. It is commonly chanted on Mondays, at Pradosham, and when someone in the family is unwell.
