Meaning

This sublime prose–poem, known as Shiva Padana Gadya or Shivapadana Dandaka Stotram, vividly portrays Lord Shiva as the Supreme Consciousness, the timeless source of all worlds, the destroyer of ignorance, and the ocean of grace. The stotra glorifies every divine aspect of Shiva—from the cosmic-dreadful Rudra to the tender, compassionate Maheshwara who resides in the hearts of devotees.

The stotra opens with Shiva shining atop Mount Kailasa like a crown jewel, adorned with the crescent moon, the holy Ganga flowing through His matted locks, and the sacred ash covering His body. He is the destroyer of desires, the protector of tapasvins, and the revealer of transcendental truths. His glance burns impurities, His smile melts fear, and His very presence sanctifies the universe.

The stotram recounts His legendary divine acts—destroying Tripurasuras, subduing Andhakasura, ending Daksha’s sacrifice, manifesting Virabhadra, and protecting devotees in countless ways. Shiva is praised as the wielder of the Pashupata weapon, the dancer of the cosmic TANDAVA, the bearer of the halahala poison, the Lord of bhutas, yogis, devas, and all beings.

The verses also emphasize Shiva’s role as the master of the five cosmic functions: creation, preservation, dissolution, concealment, and grace. He is worshipped in diverse forms—Kashi Viswanatha, Ekamranatha, Chidambaranatha, Somaskanda—and yet remains the one Supreme, indivisible Paramatma.

By the end, the devotee surrenders fully, realizing that Shiva alone is the refuge, the liberator, the true father and mother. All worlds depend on Him, and remembering Him destroys fear, sin, and suffering.

Frequently asked questions

Who composed the Sri Shiva Gadyam (Shivapadana Dandaka Stotram)?
The closing line credits it to Nilakantha Dikshita, the seventeenth-century Sanskrit poet who was a grandnephew of Appayya Dikshita. Fittingly for a poet named after the blue-throated god, the final verse praises Shiva for facing the halahala poison.
What does apadana mean in the title Shivapadana Dandaka?
Apadana means a celebrated deed, so the title promises a recital of Shiva's exploits. The prose walks through them: taking Meru as his bow and Brahma as charioteer against Tripura, raising Virabhadra from a drop of sweat to wreck Daksha's sacrifice, and slaying Jalandhara and Andhaka.
Why is the Shiva Gadyam called a gadya or dandaka?
Almost the entire text is one unbroken stream of rhyming prose epithets in the vocative, such as Kailasashikharabhushana and Chandrardhashekhara, with no metre or verse numbers. It ends with the cry vijayibhava vijayibhava, followed by a single closing verse.
Which sacred places are named in the Shiva Gadyam?
Near the end the prose hails Shiva as lord of Kashi and as dwelling at Chidambaram, Gokarna, the Rama Setu, Dakshina Kailasa, beneath the Ekamra mango tree and on the peak of Srisailam. It also calls him the one known through the Shvetashvatara Upanishad and the Atharvashikha.
What story does the closing verse of the Shiva Gadyam tell?
It recalls the churning of the ocean: while the gods quarrelled over the Kaustubha gem and the apsaras, the halahala poison rose and the worlds froze in fear. The poet says he praises the god who then stepped forward saying ma bhaishta, do not be afraid.
