Meaning

Dhyānam:
The Goddess Mahalakshmi is visualized as a radiant circle of divine energy — the Mother of the Universe, the giver of life, the consort of Lord Narayana, and the Supreme Power.

1️⃣–3️⃣ The Devas praise Mahalakshmi:
They glorify her as the embodiment of auspiciousness, peace, and all arts — the ultimate source of creation and prosperity.

4️⃣–5️⃣
She pervades all realms — her feet are Atala, her waist is Rasātala, and her heart is the heavens. She is subtler than the atom and greater than the cosmos.

6️⃣–9️⃣
Her breath is the wind, her voice the Vedas, her limbs the Deities, her joy the creation. The stars are her hair, time her power, and all beings are her manifestations.

10️⃣–12️⃣
Her nails are discipline and control; her breasts, the sources of life. She is the breath of yoga, the tongue of Saraswati, and the dawn her garment.

13️⃣–17️⃣
As Brahmi, Narayani, Shankari — she is the Mother of all deities. The Divine Trinity arises from her — Brahma, Vishnu, and Rudra.

18️⃣
She is Padmavati, the swan-like beauty of goodness, grace, and compassion — the fulfiller of devotees’ desires.

Frequently asked questions

Where does the Sri Mahalakshmi Lalita Stotram come from?
Its colophon places it in the Lakshmi Narayana Samhita and says it was sung by the assembled devas. It is presented as a prayer of the gods, not the work of a named poet.
Why is Mahalakshmi called Lalita in this stotram?
The dhyana verses show her inside a wheel of blazing light holding the noose, goad, sugarcane bow and lotus garland, the emblems usually seen with Lalita Tripurasundari. The devas then hail her as Sri Lalite Rame, joining the two goddesses in one form.
How does the Mahalakshmi Lalita Stotram describe the goddess's cosmic body?
Verses 5 to 11 map the universe onto her: Atala is her feet, Vitala her knees, Rasatala her hips and the earth her belly. Sun, moon and fire are her eyes, the directions her ears, the stars the flowers in her hair and the dawn her garment.
What does Lakshmi promise in the phala shruti of the Mahalakshmi Lalita Stotram?
In the three closing verses Lakshmi herself says that those who praise her this way will have prosperity, fame, learning, health, long life and a full household, and that fear of enemies and of rulers will leave them. She adds that the reader gains both bhukti and mukti.
How long is the Sri Mahalakshmi Lalita Stotram?
It has three dhyana verses, eighteen verses of praise by the devas and three verses of phala shruti, twenty-four in all. That makes it a comfortable length for a Friday evening puja or for Varalakshmi Vratam.
