Meaning

The Narayani Stuti is a celebrated hymn from the Devi Mahatmyam, praising Goddess Narayani as the supreme embodiment of all cosmic powers. She resides in the hearts of all beings as intelligence, wisdom and awareness, granting both worldly joy and spiritual liberation. She governs time—from moments to kalpas—and sustains the natural cycle of creation, preservation and dissolution.

The hymn glorifies her as the auspicious one, the fulfiller of desires, the remover of sorrow, and the ultimate refuge of those who seek protection. She is the eternal power behind all qualities (gunas), the mother who rescues the distressed, and the destroyer of negativity.

Each verse invokes a different divine manifestation—Brahmani, Maheshwari, Kaumari, Vaishnavi, Varahi, Narasimhi, Indrani, Chamunda, Mahamaya, Lakshmi, Saraswati—revealing that all goddesses are but expressions of the one supreme Narayani. Whether she rides the lion, wields the trident, lifts the earth as Varahi, or slays demons as Narasimhi, her purpose is always the protection of the three worlds.

Through her compassion, she removes fear, grants clarity, nourishes the mind, strengthens devotion and leads the soul toward liberation. This hymn is an offering of surrender to the universal mother who governs everything with her boundless grace.

Benefits:
• Removes fear, suffering and misfortune
• Grants clarity, intelligence and inner strength
• Provides divine protection and peace
• Enhances prosperity, well-being and spiritual growth
• Neutralizes negative energies and planetary obstacles
• Strengthens devotion and leads toward liberation

Frequently asked questions

Which chapter of the Devi Mahatmyam contains the Narayani Stuti?
It is in chapter 11 of the Devi Mahatmyam (Durga Saptashati), which belongs to the Markandeya Purana. The gods sing it after the Devi has slain Shumbha, and every verse closes with the refrain Narayani namostu te.
Why is the Sarvamangala mangalye verse of the Narayani Stuti chanted on its own?
It is verse 3 of the Narayani Stuti, addressing the Devi as Shive, Tryambake and Gauri, the refuge who brings every aim to completion. Because it is short and auspicious, many families recite just this one verse at the start of a puja or at weddings and other functions.
Which forms of the Mother appear in verses 6 to 14 of the Narayani Stuti?
These verses go through the Matrikas one by one: Brahmani on a swan-drawn vimana, Maheshwari on the great bull, Kaumari with peacock and rooster, Vaishnavi with conch and discus, Varahi lifting the earth on her tusk, Narasimhi, Aindri with the thunderbolt, Shivaduti and Chamunda. Each of them is still hailed as Narayani in the refrain.
What does the first verse of the Narayani Stuti say about the Devi?
It salutes her as the one who lives in the heart of every person as buddhi, intelligence, and who grants both svarga and apavarga, heaven and final release. Verse 2 then describes her as time itself, from the smallest units called kala and kashtha.
How many verses does this Narayani Stuti have and when is it recited?
The version given here has 16 verses and takes about five minutes at a steady pace; the full hymn in chapter 11 continues further. It is read within the Durga Saptashati parayana during Navaratri, and many devotees chant these verses by themselves on Fridays and Ashtami days.
