Varalakshmi Vratam

Varalakshmi Vratam is the Friday puja of Goddess Varalakshmi, performed in Shravana masam on the Friday that falls just before Shravana Pournami. Married women in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana observe it for the wellbeing of their husbands and families, and for health, prosperity and children. If that Friday is not possible, many observe it on another Friday of Shravana.

The Story of Charumathi

Lord Shiva narrated this vratham to Goddess Parvati. In the town of Kundinapuram lived Charumathi, a devoted wife who served her husband and in-laws with great love. Goddess Lakshmi appeared in her dream and asked her to worship Varalakshmi on the Friday before Shravana Pournami. Charumathi performed the vratham with other women of the town, and all of them were blessed with wealth and happiness. This katha is read at the end of the puja and the akshatalu are placed on the head.

How to Perform the Puja

  • Clean the house the day before, decorate the doorway with mamidi toranalu and draw muggulu.
  • Prepare a kalasham filled with water or rice, place mango leaves and a coconut, and decorate it as Goddess Lakshmi with a face, jewellery and a saree.
  • Begin with Vinayaka puja, then do Varalakshmi puja with Ashtottaram and shodashopachara puja.
  • Tie the thoram, a yellow thread with nine knots and flowers, on the right wrist after puja.
  • Offer naivedyam such as pulihora, payasam, pongali, garelu and fruits, then read the vratha katha.
  • Give vayanam with tamboolam, pasupu and kumkuma to muttaiduvas.

Fasting and Rules

Many women fast until the puja is done and eat the prasadam afterwards. Some take only fruit and milk for the day. The vratham can be performed by any woman who wishes; families follow their own customs. If health does not permit fasting, sincere puja is enough.

Significance

Varalakshmi means the Lakshmi who grants boons. Worshipping her is said to equal worship of the Ashta Lakshmis, bringing wealth, courage, knowledge, children and victory.

May Goddess Varalakshmi bless every home with abundance and harmony.
