Vaikunta Ekadasi
Vaikunta Ekadasi - The Gateway to Liberation
Among the twenty-four Ekadasis observed annually in Hindu tradition, Vaikunta Ekadasi or Mukkoti Ekadasi holds the most sacred and powerful position. On this auspicious day, Lord Vishnu opens the gates of Vaikuntha (his divine abode) to devotees on Earth. This holy Ekadasi occurs during Dhanurmasa (when the Sun is in Sagittarius), in the Shukla Paksha (bright fortnight) of either Margashira or Pushya month, just before the Sun transitions to Uttarayana. The period between the Sun's entry into Sagittarius and Makar Sankranti witnesses this momentous Mukkoti Ekadasi.
The Unique Significance of Vaikunta Ekadasi
Vaikunta Ekadasi is a rare festival that follows the lunisolar calendar, combining both solar and lunar calculations. It occurs when the Sun is in Dhanus Rashi (Sagittarius) according to the solar calendar, while the Moon is in the 11th tithi (Ekadasi) of Shukla Paksha during either Margashirsha or Pushya month according to the lunar calendar. In the Gregorian calendar, this sacred day falls between December 16 and January 13 each year.
While all Ekadasis carry equal spiritual merit, Vaikunta Ekadasi has attained exceptional importance because it occurs during Dhanurmasa, before the auspicious onset of Uttarayana. This day is also known as Ananta Chaturdashi Ekadasi. Devotees believe that Lord Vishnu personally appears at temple entrances on this day, and those who pass through the Vaikunta Dwara (Gateway to Vaikuntha) attain Moksha (liberation from the cycle of birth and death).
Mokshada Ekadasi and Putrada Ekadasi
When Vaikunta Ekadasi occurs in Margashira month, it is also called Mokshada Ekadasi - the Ekadasi capable of bestowing Moksha (salvation/liberation) to Lord Vishnu's devotees. Puranic texts reveal that on Margashira Shukla Paksha Ekadasi, Lord Krishna delivered the Bhagavad Gita to Arjuna on the battlefield of Kurukshetra. Therefore, this day is also celebrated as Gita Jayanti, commemorating the divine discourse that illuminates the path to liberation.
Conversely, when Vaikunta Ekadasi falls in Pushya month (Pausha masa), it is known as Putrada Ekadasi - the Ekadasi capable of bestowing progeny to childless couples who are devotees of Lord Vishnu. Those seeking the blessing of children or wishing well-being for their offspring observe this vrat with great devotion and receive profound results.
The Sacred Story from Padma Purana
The Padma Purana narrates the origin of Vaikunta Ekadasi. Long ago, a fierce demon named Muraasura terrorized the celestial beings and devotees. The gods sought refuge with Lord Vishnu, who engaged in a prolonged battle with the demon. Exhausted from the combat, Lord Vishnu retired to a cave to rest.
Seizing this opportunity, Muraasura attempted to kill the sleeping Vishnu. At that crucial moment, a divine feminine form emerged from Lord Vishnu's Yogamaya (divine illusory power). This goddess vanquished Muraasura, protecting the Lord. Pleased with her valor, Lord Vishnu named her "Ekadasi" and blessed that anyone observing a vrat on the Ekadasi tithi would be freed from all sins and attain Moksha. This divine blessing established the sanctity of Ekadasi observance for all time.
The Story of Putrada Ekadasi - King Suketu
In ancient times, a righteous king named Suketu ruled the kingdom of Bhadravati. His virtuous queen Champaka performed all household duties perfectly, honored guests, worshipped her husband, and engaged in numerous charitable activities. Despite their piety, they had no son, which became an unbearable void in their lives.
Desperate for a child, they visited numerous holy places. At one sacred site, they encountered sages performing penance. They served the sages and prayed for the blessing of a son. The compassionate sages recognized the couple's anguish and said, "Today is Putrada Ekadasi. If you and your wife observe this Ekadasi vrat with devotion, your wish will certainly be fulfilled".
After learning the proper procedure, the royal couple worshipped Lord Narayana and Goddess Lakshmi, along with Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, with complete faith and devotion. They observed the Ekadasi vrat meticulously. Soon after, Queen Champaka gave birth to a magnificent son. When the prince grew up, he became the crown prince and later ruled the kingdom. During his reign, he encouraged all citizens to observe this sacred vrat. This story demonstrates the extraordinary power of Putrada Ekadasi.
Vaikunta Dwara Darshan - The Divine Gateway
The opening of the Vaikunta Dwara (Gateway to Vaikuntha) in Vishnu temples across South India is the most significant event on Vaikunta Ekadasi. This sacred entrance is also called Paramapada Vaasal (Gateway to the Supreme Abode). Throughout the year, this holy gate remains closed and is opened only on Vaikunta Ekadasi.
Devotees believe that passing through this gateway symbolically grants entry to Vaikuntha, Lord Vishnu's divine realm, cleansing all sins and bringing salvation. According to the Vishnu Purana, Lord Vishnu once opened the gates of Vaikuntha for two demons who sought his blessings. This inspired the tradition of creating Vaikunta Dwaras in temples, allowing devotees to experience spiritual liberation by walking through the gate on this sacred day.
One day in Vaikuntha equals one year on Earth. Therefore, devotees who have Vaikunta Dwara Darshan gain the spiritual merit equivalent to an entire year's worth of virtuous deeds in a single moment.
Tirumala Tirupati Vaikunta Dwara
At the Sri Venkateswara Swamy Temple in Tirumala, Vaikunta Ekadasi is celebrated with unparalleled grandeur. On the night before Ekadasi (Dasami night), after the Ekanta Seva, the golden doors (Bangaru Vakili) are closed. From the early morning Suprabhatam on Vaikunta Ekadasi until the Ekanta Seva on Dwadasi night, the Vaikunta Dwaram adjacent to Sri Varu's sanctum sanctorum remains open.
For these two days, after having darshan of Lord Venkateswara, devotees proceed through the Mukkoti Pradakshina path. Lakhs of devotees from around the world gather for this sacred darshan. The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) organizes the distribution of free tokens at multiple centers, allowing orderly darshan. The Vaikunta Dwara Darshan continues for ten days.
Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple at Srirangam
At the Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple in Srirangam, Tamil Nadu, Vaikunta Ekadasi celebrations extend for 21 days. The festivities are divided into two phases: Pagal Pattu (morning worship - 10 days) and Ira Pattu (night worship - 10 days).
Lord Ranganatha, an incarnation of Vishnu, is adorned with diamond-studded garments and a pearl armor. He is brought from the sanctum through the Vaikunta Dwara to the thousand-pillar hall, where devotees receive his blessings. On the 10th day of Pagal Pattu, during the Namperumal procession, the Lord is believed to grant darshan in the Mohini form.
