Utpanna Ekadashi

According to the Hindu lunar calendar, there are 24 Ekadashis in a year — one during the Shukla Paksha (waxing phase of the moon) and one during the Krishna Paksha (waning phase). The Ekadashi that falls in the Krishna Paksha of Kartika month is known as Utpanna Ekadashi.

This day marks the divine origin of the Ekadashi Goddess herself, who emerged from Lord Vishnu’s body to destroy the demon Murasura. From that time onward, this day became sacred to Vishnu devotees as the “birth” of Ekadashi. It is believed that observing fast and worship on this day removes sins and brings prosperity and liberation.

The Story of Utpanna Ekadashi

In the Satya Yuga, a powerful demon named Murasura began tormenting gods, sages, and humans. The devas approached Lord Vishnu seeking protection. Vishnu went to battle with Murasura, who later hid in a cave under the sea.

Lord Vishnu pretended to sleep (Yoga Nidra) to lure him out. Thinking it was a good time to attack, Mura approached with a weapon. At that moment, a divine female energy emanated

When Lord Vishnu awoke and saw this act, he named the goddess Ekadashi and blessed her:

“Whoever observes fast and worships you on this day will be freed from sins and attain my abode.”

Thus, Utpanna Ekadashi is celebrated as the day when Goddess Ekadashi appeared, symbolizing the victory of good over evil.

Spiritual Significance of Utpanna Ekadashi

  • Fasting on this day purifies the mind and destroys accumulated sins.
  • The blessings of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi bring peace, prosperity, and spiritual uplift.
  • It is said that observing this Ekadashi gives the merit of performing 1,000 Ashwamedha Yajnas and 100 Rajasuya Yajnas.
