Undrallu Taddi
Undrallu Taddi is a Gauri nomu observed by Telugu women on Bhadrapada Bahula Tadiya, the third day after Bhadrapada Pournami. Goddess Gauri is worshipped, undrallu (steamed rice-flour balls) are offered as naivedyam, and vayanam is given to muttaiduvas.
Background
In Telugu tradition, Tadiya tithi is special for Gauri worship; Undrallu Taddi in Bhadrapada and Atla Taddi in Ashwayuja are sister observances. Just as Parvati did tapas to win Shiva, unmarried girls keep this nomu for a good husband and married women for saubhagyam and a happy household. Offering undrallu, the favourite food of Vinayaka, to his mother Gauri gives this festival its name and charm.
How the Day Unfolds
Women rise early, take a head bath and eat chaddannam or a light meal before sunrise, then fast until the puja is complete. Girls apply gorintaku, swing on uyyalas and spend the day in songs and games.
How to Perform the Puja
- Clean the puja space, draw a muggu and place a Gauri Devi made of turmeric on a peetham.
- Worship a turmeric Ganapati first, then do archana for Gauri with her Ashtottaram.
- Cook rice flour in hot water, shape it into small balls and steam them to make undrallu; some add jaggery and coconut for a sweet version.
- Read the Undrallu Taddi nomu katha and place the akshatalu on your head.
- Give vayanam of undrallu with tamboolam, pasupu and kumkuma to muttaiduvas.
Rules and Blessings
Many families keep this nomu for a set number of years and then perform udyapana. Follow the elders of your home on details such as the fast and the vayanam. Those who cannot fast may still do the puja with devotion. The nomu is believed to bring saubhagyam and harmony to the home.
Things to Do
After the puja, share the undrallu prasadam with family and neighbours. Seeking the blessings of elder muttaiduvas and teaching newly married daughters how to keep this nomu helps pass the tradition on to the next generation.
May Gauramma keep pasupu and kumkuma ever bright in your home.
