Toli Ekadashi
Toli Ekadashi: The First Step of the Telugu Festival Season
Toli Ekadashi is the Telugu name for Ashadha Shukla Ekadashi, the eleventh day of the bright fortnight of Ashadha. Elders call it "toli", the first, because the season of festivals begins with it. As Lord Vishnu is believed to enter yoga nidra on this day, it is also known as Shayana or Devashayani Ekadashi.
Why Toli Ekadashi Is Special
In Telugu homes this day opens the festive calendar that runs through Shravana nomulu, Vinayaka Chavithi, Dasara, Deepavali and Kartika masam. It also marks the start of Chaturmasya, the four monsoon months during which Sri Hari is said to rest on Adishesha in the Ksheera Sagara, waking on Kartika Shukla Ekadashi. The fast and puja of Toli Ekadashi are seen as the opening offering for the whole year of worship.
The Pelala Pindi Tradition
For Telugu families, Toli Ekadashi means pelala pindi. Roasted jowar puffs are ground to a flour and mixed with jaggery and cardamom, offered to the Lord and shared as prasadam. Elders say it was recommended as a strengthening food at the start of the rainy season. In some families pelala pindi is also distributed in memory of ancestors.
Puja Steps
- Take a head bath early, draw muggulu at the doorstep, apply turmeric to the threshold and tie mango-leaf thoranams.
- Garland pictures of Lord Vishnu and Lakshmi Devi and light the lamp.
- Light a lamp at the tulasi kota and worship the Lord with tulasi leaves.
- Recite Vishnu Sahasranamam or read the Bhagavad Gita.
- Offer pelala pindi, fruits and milk as naivedyam and perform harathi.
- Make a sankalpa for a small Chaturmasya vow, such as giving up one vegetable or lighting a lamp daily.
Fasting and Temple Visits
Many people avoid rice, keep a phalahar fast and spend the night in bhajans, breaking the fast after puja on Dwadashi morning. Vishnu and Venkateswara temples see large crowds. In Maharashtra, the famous Ashadhi Ekadashi pilgrimage to Lord Vitthala at Pandharpur falls on this same day.
May the festive season that begins with Toli Ekadashi fill your home with joy and prosperity.
