Shattila Ekadashi

Shattila Ekadashi - The Sacred Path to Liberation Through Sesame

Among all the Ekadashis observed in Hindu tradition, Shattila Ekadashi holds a unique and special position. This sacred Ekadashi falls on the Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) of Magha month according to Purnimant calendar, or Pausha month according to Amavasyant calendar. The name "Shattila" derives from two Sanskrit words: "Shat" meaning six, and "Tila" meaning sesame seeds. This auspicious day emphasizes using sesame seeds in six different ways, which is believed to cleanse all sins and pave the path to Moksha (liberation).

The Profound Significance of Shattila Ekadashi

Shattila Ekadashi is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and Lord Krishna. According to the Padma Purana, Lord Krishna explained the importance of this Ekadashi to King Yudhishthira. On this sacred day, along with Lord Vishnu, cows (Gomata) also hold special importance.

According to Hindu beliefs, observing this vrat brings auspicious news regarding progeny, grants the fruits of thousands of years of penance, and provides merit equivalent to donating gold. Those who observe this Ekadashi fast remain healthy across many lifetimes, and all their sins are destroyed.

The Spiritual Significance of Sesame Seeds

Sesame seeds play the central role in Shattila Ekadashi observances. According to Puranic tradition, sesame seeds originated from Lord Vishnu's perspiration during Samudra Manthan (the churning of the cosmic ocean). Therefore, sesame seeds are considered an extremely pure food substance. They are believed to possess the ability to absorb negative energies and purify both body and soul.

Offering sesame seeds to Lord Vishnu on Shattila Ekadashi brings divine blessings and protection from malefic planetary influences. From a health perspective, sesame seeds are nutritional powerhouses rich in essential minerals like calcium, iron, and magnesium, contributing to bone health, blood formation, and overall well-being.

The Sacred Legend - Lord Vishnu and the Brahmin Woman

Once, Sage Narada approached Lord Vishnu and prayed, "O Lord! Please accept my obeisance. What is the merit of observing Shattila Ekadashi? What is its story? Kindly explain this to me." Hearing Narada's prayer, Lord Vishnu narrated:

"O Narada! I shall tell you the true account that I witnessed directly. Listen attentively. Long ago in the mortal world, there lived a Brahmin woman. She always performed fasts and penances. Once, she fasted continuously for an entire month, which weakened her body considerably. Though she was extremely intelligent, she never donated food to gods or Brahmins".

"I contemplated - this Brahmin woman has purified her body through fasting and will attain Vaikuntha Loka. However, she never donated food, and without food, it is difficult for beings to find satisfaction. Thinking thus, I went to the mortal world and asked that Brahmin woman for food as alms. She asked, 'O Yogiraj! Why have you come here?' I said, 'I need alms.' In response, she placed a lump of mud in my alms bowl. I took it and returned to heaven".

"After some time, that Brahmin woman also left her body and came to heaven. Due to the effect of donating mud, she received a beautiful house with a mango tree in heaven. However, she found that house empty of food and other necessities. Distressed, she came to me and said, 'O Lord! I have worshipped you through numerous fasts, yet my house remains empty of provisions. What is the reason for this?'".

"I told her - 'Go to your house. When celestial women come to see you, ask them about the glory and procedure of Shattila Ekadashi vrat. Do not open the door until they explain.' Hearing the Lord's words, she went home. When the celestial women arrived and asked her to open the door, the Brahmin woman said, 'If you have come to see me, first tell me about the glory of Shattila Ekadashi'".

"Then one celestial woman said, 'If that is your wish, listen attentively. I shall tell you about Shattila Ekadashi vrat and its glory along with the proper procedure.'" This story illustrates the transformative power of food donation and the significance of Shattila Ekadashi.

The Six Sacred Uses of Sesame Seeds

On Shattila Ekadashi, using sesame seeds in six different ways is paramount. Following these six methods brings the grace of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi, eliminates poverty, and invites prosperity:

1. Bathing with Sesame Water (Tila Snana):
Add black sesame seeds to bath water. Bathing with this sesame-infused water brings physical purification and spiritual sanctity. Sesame seeds absorb negative energies and invoke divine power.

2. Sesame Paste Application (Tila Lepana):
Prepare a paste (ubtan) with sesame seeds and apply it to the body. This purifies the skin and enhances bodily radiance. Massaging the body with sesame oil before bathing is also auspicious.

3. Sesame in Sacred Fire Ritual (Tila Havana):
Offer sesame seeds as oblations in the sacred fire (havan kund). Offering sesame in fire burns away sins and increases divine energy.

4. Sesame in Libation (Tila Tarpana):
Offer Tarpan to ancestors with sesame seeds. Mixing sesame in water and offering it to departed ancestors brings satisfaction to their souls.

5. Consuming Sesame-Based Food:
Eat food items prepared with sesame (til-gud laddoos, sesame barfi). This nourishes the soul and enhances spiritual energy.

6. Donating Sesame (Tila Dana):
Donate sesame seeds or sesame-based food items to the poor and Brahmins. It is believed that the more sesame one donates, the longer one can stay in heaven.
