Vat Savitri Vratam (Jyeshtha Pournami)
Vat Savitri on Jyeshtha Pournami: The Vratam for Saubhagyam
This Vat Savitri Vratam is observed on Jyeshtha Shukla Pournami by married women for the long life and well-being of their husbands. It is also called Vat Pournami. Many families in Maharashtra, Gujarat and South India worship the banyan tree on this full moon, while in North India the same vratam is kept on Amavasya.
The Story in Brief
Savitri, daughter of King Ashwapati, chose Satyavan, who lived in the forest, as her husband even though she knew he was destined to die young. She fasted strictly for three days before his fated death. When Satyavan died, she followed Yama and won him over with her wisdom and dharma, gaining sight and kingdom for her in-laws, sons for her father and finally her husband's life. This Mahabharata story is a celebration of devotion and a woman's intelligence.
Puja on Pournami
- Take a head bath early, wear a new or clean saree and apply turmeric to the mangalasutra.
- Draw a muggu at the foot of a banyan tree and worship images or pictures of Savitri, Satyavan and Yama.
- Pour water at the tree, offer turmeric, kumkum, akshatalu and flowers, and circle it while winding thread.
- Offer fruits, payasam, jaggery and soaked chickpeas as naivedyam.
- Listen to the vrata katha and give vayanam of turmeric, kumkum, bangles and tamboolam to other married women.
Vratam Rules
Some women observe the vratam for three days from Trayodashi to Pournami, while many fast only on Pournami. The fast is broken after the puja with fruit and prasadam. As it is Jyeshtha Pournami, some families also perform Satyanarayana Vratam on this day.
Significance
The banyan lives for centuries and keeps spreading, and the vratam prays that married life may be just as strong and lasting. Savitri's story shows that determination, dharma and wisdom can triumph even over death.
With Savitri Devi's blessings, may every woman's saubhagyam last forever.
