Parama Shuddha Ekadashi
Parama Shuddha Ekadashi: The Waning-Moon Ekadashi of Adhika Masa
Parama Ekadashi, also called Parama Shuddha Ekadashi, is the Bahula (Krishna) Paksha Ekadashi of Adhika Masa. Since Adhika Masa occurs only roughly once in about three years, this Ekadashi is rare. It is the second Ekadashi of the Purushottama Masa, coming after Padmini Ekadashi.
The Story of Sumedha and Pavitra
In the city of Kampilya lived a righteous brahmin, Sumedha, and his wife Pavitra. Though very poor, they never failed to honour guests, often going hungry themselves to feed visitors. One day Sage Kaundinya came to their home and they served him with devotion. Seeing their hardship, the sage advised them to observe Parama Ekadashi, the Bahula Ekadashi of Adhika Masa. When they kept the vrata faithfully, their poverty ended and they gained comfort and wealth. Some texts also say Kubera observed this vrata and became the lord of wealth.
Puja Steps
- Bathe early on Ekadashi and make the sankalpa meditating on Purushottama.
- Decorate a Lakshmi Narayana picture with flowers and light a ghee lamp.
- Offer tulasi, yellow flowers and sandal paste.
- Recite Vishnu Sahasranamam and read the Parama Ekadashi katha.
- Offer fruits, milk and jaggery, and welcome any guest with something kind.
- On Dwadashi, give food in charity and break the fast.
Pancharatra Vrata and Rules
In some traditions, a five-day "Pancharatra" observance begins on this Ekadashi. Most families simply keep a phalahar fast on Ekadashi and break it on Dwadashi. Rice and grains are avoided; choose the level of fasting according to your health.
Significance
The story of Sumedha and Pavitra teaches that hospitality and generosity should not be given up even in hard times. "Parama" means supreme; devotees believe this rare Ekadashi gives the highest merit, eases financial difficulties and brings peace.
May Sri Lakshmi Narayana bless every home with abundance and contentment.
