Papankusha Ekadashi
Papankusha Ekadashi: The Goad That Restrains Sin
Papankusha Ekadashi is the Ekadashi of the Shukla Paksha in the Ashwayuja month, falling the day after Vijayadashami. Devotees fast and worship Sri Maha Vishnu as Padmanabha Swamy. The name means "the goad (ankusham) for sins": just as a goad controls an elephant, this vratham is said to restrain one's sins.
The Puranic Story
According to the Padma Purana, Sri Krishna explained the glory of this Ekadashi to Dharmaraja. A hunter named Krodhana lived in the Vindhya hills and spent his whole life in violence. Fearing his approaching end, he went to the sage Angirasa for help. On the sage's advice he observed the Ashwayuja Shukla Ekadashi with devotion, was freed of his sins and reached Vishnu's abode. The message is that sincere repentance and devotion can transform anyone.
How to Perform the Puja
- On Dashami night, eat a light sattvic meal and take a sankalpam for the vratham.
- On Ekadashi, bathe early and light a lamp before a picture of Lord Vishnu.
- Worship Padmanabha Swamy with tulasi leaves, yellow flowers and sandal paste.
- Recite the Vishnu Sahasranamam or chant "Om Namo Narayanaya".
- Some devotees keep jagarana at night with bhajans and Harinama.
- On Dwadashi, offer naivedyam, give charity as you can and break the fast (parana).
Fasting Rules
Rice and lentil dishes are avoided on Ekadashi. Those who cannot fast fully may take fruit, milk or sabudana. Elders and people with health concerns should observe according to their capacity. Avoiding anger, lies and gossip is also part of the vratham.
Significance
The Puranas say this vratham removes sins, brings peace of mind and also helps the ancestors attain a good state. Donating food, clothes or a cow on this day is considered highly meritorious.
May the grace of Padmanabha Swamy always be with your family.
