Nirjala Ekadashi
Nirjala Ekadashi: The Waterless Fast
Nirjala Ekadashi is observed on Jyeshtha Shukla Ekadashi, the eleventh day of the bright fortnight of Jyeshtha. "Nirjala" means without water, and devotees fast without even drinking water. Keeping this single Ekadashi is believed to give the merit of all the Ekadashis of the year. Because of its link with Bhima, it is also called Bhima Ekadashi or Bhimaseni Ekadashi.
The Story of Bhima
The Pandavas and Draupadi observed every Ekadashi fast. Bhima, however, had a fierce digestive fire called Vrika and could not bear hunger. He asked Sage Vyasa for a way to gain the merit of Ekadashi. Vyasa told him that if he fasted on Jyeshtha Shukla Ekadashi without food or water, he would receive the merit of all twenty-four Ekadashis of the year. Bhima followed this advice, and the day came to be known as Nirjala Ekadashi.
How the Vrata Is Observed
- Traditionally no food or water is taken from sunrise on Ekadashi to sunrise on Dwadashi; water touching the lips during bath or achamana is allowed.
- Bathe early and worship Lord Vishnu with tulasi and flowers.
- Chant "Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya" and recite Vishnu Sahasranamam.
- Donating a pot filled with water (jalakumbham), a hand fan, an umbrella, jaggery or fruits is special to this Ekadashi.
- Keep jagarana at night and break the fast on Dwadashi morning after puja.
Be Careful
A waterless fast is very demanding, and it falls in peak summer. Children, elders, pregnant women and anyone with health conditions such as diabetes should not give up water; a fruit or milk fast is a sensible alternative. Many families say devotion matters more than straining the body. Consult a doctor if you are unsure.
Significance
Nirjala Ekadashi stands for self-control. The beautiful idea at its heart is to stay thirsty yourself while giving water to others. Setting up chalivendrams (drinking-water stalls) and distributing buttermilk are common acts of seva in Telugu towns on this day.
May this vrata, once a boon for Bhima, bless us all with restraint and the grace of Sri Hari.
