Naraka Chaturdashi

Naraka Chaturdashi falls on Ashwayuja Bahula (Krishna) Chaturdashi, the day before Deepavali Amavasya. It celebrates the victory of Sri Krishna and Satyabhama over the demon Narakasura, and is marked by an early-morning oil bath and rows of lamps in every Telugu home.

The Story of Narakasura

Naraka, the son of Bhudevi, ruled Pragjyotishapura. Proud of the boons he had won, he troubled the devas and rishis, imprisoned sixteen thousand princesses and stole the earrings of Aditi, mother of the devas. Since his death could come only at his mother's hands, Satyabhama, an amsha of Bhudevi, rode into battle with Sri Krishna, and Naraka fell to her arrow. The Puranas say that Naraka asked that the day of his death be celebrated by the world with lamps. That is why, in Telugu tradition, Satyabhama's courage holds a special place in this festival.

How It Is Celebrated

  • Abhyanga snanam: Rise before sunrise and take a head bath with sesame oil. This bath is believed to be as sacred as a dip in the Ganga.
  • Lamps: In the evening, sesame-oil lamps are lit at the doorstep and around the house. Many families also place a Yama deepam facing south for Lord Yama.
  • Puja: Sri Krishna, Satyabhama and Goddess Lakshmi are worshipped. People wear new clothes and prepare sweets and pindivantalu.
  • Crackers: Children and elders light chichubuddulu and kakara puvvottulu to celebrate the slaying of Narakasura.

The Inner Meaning

Narakasura stands for the ego and ignorance within us. Bathing at dawn and lighting a lamp mean clearing away inner darkness and welcoming the light of knowledge. Elders believe that offering the Yama deepam with devotion removes the fear of untimely death.

Things to Keep in Mind

Finish the oil bath before sunrise while Chaturdashi tithi prevails, as tradition recommends. Use crackers safely and keep water nearby. Many families begin lighting lamps on this day and continue through Deepavali.

From Naraka Chaturdashi to Deepavali, may light and joy fill every home.
